The charges made for stock trucks by tlie Public Works Department on lines of railway not yet taken over by the Hallway Department were recently protested against by tlie Auckland provincial executive of the Now Zealand Farmers' Union in a resolution forwarded to tho Minister, Sir William Frnser. In replyhiß to "this the, Minister says: "It is ilic practice of tlie Public Works Department, on lines where a temporary service is in operation, to adopt (lie ■■Railway Department's ordinary tariff throughout. The minimum rate for stock- , tracts up to 20 miles is 15s. This may seem somowhat heavy when the cattle arc required to bo carried only a short distance, but any departure- from the ordinary rate would be likely to load to trouble, when a lino was opened for ordinary traffic and tho higher tariff restored by the Railway Department.
