DEATH OF NANNA (By "Wairiki.") A cable message received from Melbourno this week , announced, the death from/injuries, sustained whilst spelling on the Bacchus Marsh, of the waira-rapa-owned Nanna. Nanna, who went to Australia in company with the other members of Mr. W. R. Kemball's team last January, and who very nearly brought off a surprise in her first start on the Other side (in the Salisbury Welter Handicap, at Caulfield, when she was beaten by a head after leading the whole seven furlongs), could hold her own in the best of local open company in a eix-furlong event. She did not "race as a two-year-old, and as a three-vear-old won at her "flr.st start for her breeder, Mr, C. G. Dalgety. She was then acquired by Mr, Kemball, and proved a good winner for that sportsman, winning no less a sum than ,£2f125. whilst she carried hie colours. Though Nanna showed to best advantage over a en-furlong course, sho won a seven-furlong event and ono over a mile in the latter event being followed home by Rude. She also was second in the 1918 New Zealand Oaks, being beaten by Impediment. Nanna wns well bred, bein=; by Martian (son of Martagon) from Nantes, a mare by Stepniak from Huguenot, by Apremont. Nantes is the dnin of Marsa, Mntty, Martyre (all by Martian), Nantville (a two-year-old by Sanquhar), and Artillerie (by Royal Artillery). Nanna and Artillerie Have proved the best of Nantes' stock bo far. the latter mare winning the New Zealand Oaks and the Caulfield Stakee two years in succession. Nanna's loss is a severe one to her owner, also to her« trainer, W. Hawthorne, and she will also be missed on the Npw Zealand courses, where, by the way, sho was a great favourite with the gentler sex.
