SPORTS GROUNDS AND BATHS
QUESTIONS' FOR MUNICIPAL CANDIDATES. The committee set up at a recent meeting of representatives from sports bodies met on Monday evening' for the purpose of preparing a memorandum to 'be. submitted to candidates at the election for Mavor and city councillors. There were present ■Messrs. C. P. Skerrett, K.C. (in the chair), D. Murray Kean (Tennis Association), C. G. Wilson (Cricket Association), A. W. Manning ■ (Hockey Association), A. A. Marryatt (Amateur Athletics).'A. 13. Wells (Association Football). C. W. Tringham (Sports Protection League), and Dr. Cameron (Municipal Golf). An nnologv for absence was received from Dr. M'Bvedy (Rugby Union). After some discussion, it was decided to submit the following questions to candilates:— . Use of Reserves in Wet Weather-Will von support that in the case of winter sports a committee of three persons nominated by winter clubs should meet a delegation from the Reserves Committee at noon on each doubtful day of play to determine whether any particular ground is unplayable—such committee to act only in an advisory capacity? Pees for Use of Resarves.—Are you m favour of the continuance of: the existing fees charged to snorts bodies for the exclusive use of playing areas? Thorndon Baths.—Arc you in favour of the amount of compensation payable in respect of the taking of Thorndon Esplanade and Baths being earmarked to provide adequate facilities for swimming lviths in.the northern end of the city or as near thereto as conditions will allow? Municipal Golf.—Will you support the extension of the links to provide an 18liolo course, and the. reduction of the annual fee to .£2 25.? Central Park-Will you .upport the policy of providing sports grounds in Central Pari;, and if elected do your best to see that the work is carried out without unnecessary delay? Anderson Park—Will you support the adoption of improved methods in the formation of Anderson Park and promote, steps for providing the money required for the completion of the park? Pirie Street Reserve, (1) Are you i" favour cif n comprehensive Tenort hciifS "lil.iinedJ'ns to the suitability of the Pirin Streot Reserve for: (a) Sports grounds ."•"1 tennis lawns, or (b) if physical conditions prevent the provision nf snorts "rounds «<= t* it* suitability "or tennis lawns? It was decided that candidates should lie asked to forward their renlies as early as rossilil". and the committee will meet 'again on Thursday, April 21,' to consider the. answers received. The chairman mentioned 'that the committee recognised the advancement, made in recent years, but. considered that a.stillmoro vigorous ■policy'was rennircd in providing for the recreation of .the people. The committee do not claim that the works which arc enumerated should lake precedence over other essential city but that thev should be considered works of the highest importance, and should be lindertaken as speedily as possible.
