! BRANCH DELEGATES TO MEET i IN CONFERENCE. ' At a special meeting of the executive ! of the Amalgamated Society of Kaihray i Servants held to consider tho protests by : branches against the terms of settlement i submitted by the Minister of Railways ; in regard to thb pay of railwayinen, it • was unanimously resolved to convene- a ; conference of delegates from all branches i to meet in Wellington on May 5. to ; confer with tho executive with reference i to the amendments in tho classification. 1 Speaking on tho subject, the president i (Mr. R. Hampton) stated that there had I been no change of attitude by the cxecu- ; tivo. The members of tho executtvo ! stood to any agreement they had made ! with the management and the Minister, ; in so far a« tho agreement went. Tho | officers of the society were doing their ' best to explain the. proposals to the i members, but there were <i 7 branches in : the Dominion, and it was a difficult task 1 to overtake misunderstandings and crij ticisms. The executive had thorefore dei cided that it was the quickest and most ! effective way of bringing the matter to i finality by calling delegate together tef presenting all branches. "We are anxiI mis." he said, "that tho Minister should i be in a position to go straight ahead ! with the amending Act as soon as the : House meets. Every care will be taken ! to put the view of the executive coun-i-cil in clear and unmistakable terms be- '• fore this conference, and the society's J officers will stand or fall by the result. ! Although there is in somo quarters n i good deal of hostility to the proposals I j am confident that when tho position is fully explained the action of tho execu- | tive in the matter will be sustained.'
