The death is announced of the Hon. Lionel Arthur Tollcmaehe (80), whoss career was remarkable for the triumph or mental <|iialities over physical -iHsabilities. Suffering from extreme short sight and a continual stammer, lie yet acquired great reputation as a scholar. . He read for (lie Bar. but difficulties of sight and speech proved insuperable. He wrote much in such magazines as "Tile Fortnightly Review," "Maeinillan," and "Fraser," and published several .volumes of essays, biographical sketches of Mark Pattison, Jowett, and Gladstone, and two volumes of reminiscences entitled, "Old and Odd Memories," and'. '.'Nuts and Chestnuts," In later life his sight entirely failed.
