PERSONAL NOTES FROM LONDON

(From Our Own Correspondent.) London, February 21. Mr. Mas.sey and Sir Joseph Ward have been busily, engaged at the sittings of tho. British Empire Committee at the Peace Conference this week. Admiral Sir Eosslyn Wenryss, the First Sea Lord, and General Sir Henry Wilson are members of the committee, in addition to the political representatives of the Mother Country and tho dominions. Mr. F. D. Thomson, secretary to Mr. Massey, has been appointed secretary of the committee.

The High Commissioner (Sir Thomas Mackenzie) has gone into a nursing home to undergo a slight operation. Brigadier-General C. W. Melvill, C.M.G., has taken over from General Richardson as General Officer Commanding tho New Zealand Forces in the United Kingdom. General Richardson has arranged to leave for the Dominion next week, and before his departure is to be entertained at dinner by the Headquarters Staff. Bishop Sadlier, of Nelson, is staying at the Thackeray Hotel, awaiting a steamer for New Zealand. A great part of his time lately has been taken ii'i with work in connection with the Cawfhron Trust, of Nelson. Lord Jellicoe is due to leave Plymouth to-day in H.M.S. New Zealand in commencement of his world tour, -which is to extend to the.second week of Aiay of next year. Captain O. E. leggett is in command of tho ship,' Commodore F. C. Dreyer has been, appointed Admiral Jellicoe's chief of staff, and Lieutenant L. Y. Morgan flag lieutenant. The ship will visit New Zealand in June or July, and then return to Australia to bring Lord Jellicoe across on August 15.' Departure for San.Francisco will be taken about October 1.

London is at present filled with New Zealanders on leave awaiting ships to take them home, and the various .clubs and.hostels are crowded to overflowing. The departuie of several vessels lately has been delayed by labour troubles, and this has led to some, congestion. Mr. G. O. Sutton, who has been secretary and treasurer of the. New Zealand War "Contingent Association for some time, is returning to New Zealand shortly. Mr.'l. W. Eaymond, chairman of the association, who recently had a j very severe attack of. influenza, has arranged to take a short holiday in the Channel Islands with Mrs. Eaymond. Major VJckerman, D.5.0., of the Tunnelling Coips, and formerly of the Publio Works Department, Wellington, is staying with Mrs. Vickerman at the Park Rnval Hotel. T.ftvosf.er Gardens, and expects to remain on this side for some months at least. Major D.. Kettle, Sj.C, has been appointed A.P.M., N.Z.E.F., with temporary rank of lieutenant-colonel. Captain T. M. Wilkes, M.{!., who has been appointed D.A.O.M.G. for the N.Z.B.F. in France, is attached to. General, Headquarters as liason officer for demobilisation. The Eev. J. Boss sucoeeds the Rev. A. Macdonnld, 0.8. E., as principal Presbyterian chaplain, on .the latter's return to the Dominion.' Captain Eric -Beeves, N.Z.R.8., attended tho investitu.ro at Buckingham Palace this, week to receive the Military Cross awarded him last year.' Captain Reeves is on leave in London pending his return home to Wellington, Eng.-Commander E. E. Low, D.5.0., E.N.R., and old Nelsonian, has been in tnwn this week on leave from the Wahine. The Rev. G. Stubbs, of Timaru, chaplain in H.M.A.S. Brisbane, has also been Up on leave. ■ . ■' Miss N. M. Palmer, formerly of the Davis Street Hospital. Wellington, who has been nursing in Franco throughout the war, is now living permanently in London with Mrs. Palmer. Miss Clara Palmer is remaining in Borne. The New Zealand Rhodss Scholars for 1913 and 1914, Messrs. F. F. Miles, and W. M. Jones, liave been demobilised to proceed- with, their course at Oxford. Captain E. Tustin, N.Z.R.B. (Wellington), is taking a law .course at Gray's Inn. Dr. A". MacC'ormick, D.5.0., N.Z.M.C., has been demobilised in England. Miss V. M. Greig, of Napier, returns f(. New Zealand' 1 early next month. Instructors under the New Zealand Educfition Service have been appointed as follow, all with the rank of saotain:— Lieut. CM. Smith, 2nd Lieut' G. H. Battersby, D.C.M., W. R. Tuck. N.' Cole, T. Brodie, D. L. Cameron, R. N. Vanes, W. J. Bishop, and ,T. D. Hartz.

Lieut. L. B. Glarkson, eon of Mr. J: B. Clarkson, of Christchurch, has been promoted captain. He is a technical officer in the Royal Air Force.
