LOWER HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL

The fortnightly meeting of the Lower Ilutt Borough Council was held last, evening. Present: The M.ayor (.Mr. E. P. ltishwdrtn), and Councillors 'A. J. Hobbs, A. J. West, \V. ■ Keny S. Clendon, J. Brassel, W. Walton, and W. Mcldrura. The Public Trustee wrote advising that the council's application for a loan of i'3so had been granted. The Railway Department wrote enclosing copy of proclamation ajlocating land near iilellings tor road purposes. A letter was received from the Minister of Public Health suggesting that a special clean-up week should be arranged for as a.preventive against a possible recrudescence of the epidemic. The Mayor stated that the town was already being systematically cleaned up, and the council would continue to keep the town clean. Tho Agricultural Department wrote suggesting the advisableness of having spiderwort declared a noxious weed in the borough. Councillor Brassel moved and Councillor West seconded that the request be complied with. This was agreed to. Mr. J. D. Climie called attention to a dangerous angle in the road-in Marsden Street. The matter was referred to the engineer for report. The secretary of the Peace Celebration Committee wrote outlining the committee's proposals for celebrating peace in Lo\,er Mutt, and asking U) that' the council vote a sum of £b0 towards the funds; (2) for use of the unused portion of the Recreation Ground for • a bonfire; (3) that the council provide material for same; (-1) that tho main street between Queen's Head and Lning's Road ba closed for vehicular traffic between 9.30 and 11 a.m. on the Tuesday set apart for peace celebrations; (f>) permission to hold a thanksgiving service on the Sunday of peace celebration week. The Mayor moved that the Peace Committee's requests be given effect to, and this was agreed to. The secretary of tho Wellington Rugby Union wrote applying for use of the Recreation Ground for the season 1919. Councillor Walton moved that the request be granted; Councillor West sec01K'C('' , „ ~ L -1. Councillor Kerr suggested that it should be stipulated that some of the senior matches should be played on the ground, and that one senior match in each round be played at Hutt, and a third of Ihe takings go to tho council.
