'I'lie tiuestion of improvement in the New I'iymouth service is having close attention, and it was hoped that at an early data tho company would be in a position to place a vessel of ■ the JMom type to- run in conjunction witil the C'onnna from the south, ana 111 tll o interim the company would give an extva connection over and above Wj oorinna y one of its smaller cargo boats, as in the ease of tho Kararau, which lias .1 ust visited the port, also tho Kowhai. So far as the service from Wellington i.o Ijew Plymouth is concerned, the company has' .inst chartered the Karu to tho Canterbury shipping Company, and it 'was their intention to let tie vessel mako trips from
lime to time from Wellington, via Picton to New Plymouth. They looked forward lo tho general position in regard to tonnage becoming easier in the near future, and as would no doubt liitvo been seen from ProES messages, had already secured two large cargo steamers which would bo delivered to them in the Old Country next month, in addition lo which they had complete negotiations for three other vessels of similar typo to be delivered before the end of the year. With these vessels added lo the fleet, the smaller tonnage would lie released, and fair consideration given to the requirements of the company's regular trade 3 which had been penalised lo some extent through war shortage.

The fishing steamer Kiwaka, -commanded by Captain Stewart, late of the Kaitoa, arrived. at W.apganui. on Friday night, afier a protracted trip from' Wellington. She left Wellington a week ago and spent some time investigating fishing grounds at -Kapiti Island. During the rough weather on Wednesday and Thursday she proved herself ,an excellent seaboat. The fish caught' during the trip up.consisted mostly ol schnapper, but blue cod, Bhark. and gurnet wero also obtained. Fishing off Wanganui with hook- and line on Friday, the Iti-.vaka secured more than 50 schnapper in under two hourß. Captain Stewart will dry the fishinf grounds off Patea and as 'a local 'fishmonger has, contracted for the whole Catch after each trip, Wanganui will in future bo the vessel's headquarters.
