Tho P and O. steamer Malta, which is Homeward bound from WellinKton. has arrived at Bombay, where, on examina, tion tho health authorities tomid that tho vessel was infested with what are known as plague rats, and the ship was detained in port. It is understood that tho whole of the Malta's 'jarßo is being, or has been landed at Bombay by order of tho health author'tios. so that the steamer, may uo thoroughly disinfected. There is every probability that after this has been dona the cargo will be reshinped and carried to its destination. The whole of tho Malta's cargo was shipped at .Wellington, from which port the vessel sailed on February 8 for the United Kingdom, via Newcastle, Bombay, and Suez. .MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. 0. B. The U.S. and A. Line's steamer Bessa readied Auckland on Saturdiiy morning from New l'ork, and should be at Wellington on .Friday. Sydney will then be her next port. To-day the Pictoii-Jfelson steamer Pateena will make the lirst alteration in her usual running to allow for extra trips for Easier week. TJie Willochra is not bringing cargo. She is to bo loaded in New Zealand by the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Co. for London. Tho Navua, Toromec, Baghcld, and Monowai, will be within wireless range of Wellington Kadio to-night. The barque Antiope, which is owned by the Dunedin Iron Mills, reached San Francisco on March 31 after a passage of 69 days from Auckland. She will load at Kan Francisco for New Zealand. The small steamer P.iwalia, which, left Wellington on Friday v;ei>k, arrived at Wauganui at 8.15 p.m. on Friday. Owing to her being seven days out on so short n trip some anxiety was felt for her safety. The Itiwaka, which was goine to fish' oti the way up the coast, left Jfana Island on Tuesday morning.
