AUSTItALIAN-SAN FRANCISCO TRADE. As a result of the release of a largo fleet of British merchantmen to the needs of commerce by the British Admiralty in January, San Francisco representatives of tho Union Steam Ship Company say they expect to shortly announce tne assumption , of full service between Australia, New Zealand and San . Francisco. The Moana was the only steamer of tho fleet operating with a regular passenger service, and the Paloona was used lor freight only. Slie has, however, again become a ivHjger hip Three liners were in tho passenger service at the outbreak of tlio war X 1914. There were ahio a number of freighters. Plans were at hand for the installation of a, number of freighters of a fast type with a large refrigerating capacity. Tho later vessols were to bo operated; in the frozen meat and butter trade, the Commonwealth having experimented with a number of shipments to San Francisco. As a. preliminary to tho establishment 9 fthe former serviceJjy the. Union it. • expected that-the company will use the vessels that may be released, but after the conditions are more normal it is planned to in the service a number of large carriers in the 'freight line and big and fast liners of the Niagara typo in the passenger service. The renewal of this service will eliminate. Ilia present conditions of freight, and passenger service between San Francisco and Australia.

Two old British sailing vessels arrived on April 2 at Svdney. The Norwegian s.np Concordia, which was formerly known as the Celtic Eaco, arrived, after a fast passage 0f.52 days from San Francisco. The Norwegian four-masted barque Stoyeren, which was one of the Andrew \\ en s licet of ■ sailers a few years when she was then Known as 'the Pecchbank. arrived rom New York, via Melbourne.

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT LINE'S POLICY.

_ Replying to a deputation of Australasian merchants/Mr. Larkin.; manager of the Commonwealth ships, emphasised the fact that the Commonwealth Line would .treat all shippers alike. It would not 'Rive the smallest preference, or fight tlu conference unless forced to. It was intended shortly to.' improve the service. Referring to the criticism of the existing ships as boins: unsuitcd for the trade, Mr. Lnrkin said: "Some of them are equal to the conference bpats. The deficiencies are remediable, and ultimately, perhaps, the boot -will be on the oth6r foot." STEADY FREIGHTS. Mr. Thorogocd. secretary of the Australasian Merchants' Association, in the course of an interview at London, said that, provided the rates woro reasonable, merchants would prefer a 6tcady system of freights. The conference hitherto had maintained this, and had offered' all tho tonnage required.. Merchants were urging, a reduction of the present high rates which they expected in the liext few months. They would prefer a i-ntural gradual reduction, which would cause a minimum of interference. Any rate cuttine would seriously damage the Australasian trade with the United Kingdom. Till? ARATAPU. The brigantine Aratapu sailed into port yesterday morning after a- trip of utile days from Dunedin. The voyage at tho outset was favourable, but, as the vessel came, up the coast, the weather became worse and sho was for four days trying to reach Wellington Harbour. On completion of discharge of a, genera) cargo at. No. 9 Queen's: Wharf she will.load for the southern port. Messrs. ' M'Arthur, Jeffries and Co. are agents. ' THE JfAIvUBA.
