HOUSING IN LONDON
■ AN APPALLING STATEMENT. London, April 7. In moving the second rending of the Housing Bill, Dr. J. C.. Addison. President of the. Local Government Board, stated that over three millions of jjpoplo are living in an overcrowded condition, including 758,000 in London. The Bill imposed the duty on the local authorities' to undertake hbusing schemes with the aid of a Government subsidy on tho basis that the local authority should not be required to contribute more than would be produced by the levy ot a penny rate. It is estimated that 70,0(10 houses are unfit for habitation, and an additouai Ml) are seriously ,'elective. A tvpieal slum street in Shorcditch contained 29 houses, making 1118 tenements, in which 733 people were living._ The Health Officer at Fin6bury roportea that out of 138 sufferers from tuberculosis M were compelled to sliaro a bed or a bedroom with other-" 1 . luunhabitoble houses should be condemned without compensation.
