Colonel••■C. Mi Gibbon,'C.M.G., LG.S., Chief of the General Staff, 'has-returned from tho South Island after a visit lo the Cold Lakes district. Ho has arranged to leave for the north to-morrow on a farewell visit lo the Auckland military district, and will return to Wellington on Thursday of next week.
His Graco Archbishop Redwood celebrated his eightieth birthday yesterday. Born in Staffordshire, England, , Archbishop Redwood spent his earlier days iu New Zealand, and was educated for tho priesthood in France and England. He was consecrated Bishop of Wellington on March 17, 1874, land Archbishop in 1887—tho first and only Archbishop in New Zealand. His Grace, who still enjoys excellent health, received many messages of congratulation. ■
Mr. R. \V. M'Villy, Assistant General Manager of Railways, who was slightly indisposed on Sunday and Monday, was able to attend at his oflico yesterday.
A Press Association , cablegram from London states that Senator Pearco (Australian Defence Minister) is confined to his bed by an attack of influenza, but his condition is not serious. .His engagements have been cancelled for a few days.
The following is au extract from the London Gazette giving particulars of the gallant action for which a military decoration was awarded to Captain Robert Duffus M'Farland, Auckland Regiment:— "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Ho led his company in an attack, and though wounded remained at duty for some time. He showed the greatest courage and resource when his right flank was held up by a strong point, and his splendid' leadership contributed materially to tho success, of the operation." Captain M'Farland is a son of Canon M'Farland, St. Barnabas's Church, Auckland, and' received, tho Military Cross from His Majesty the King, at Buckingham Palace in February last.
Mr. P. Herbert, who for many years was chief of the Detective Department in Dunedin, is at present on a visit to that city, prior to leavingon an extended tour of Australia.
Mr. P. J. M'Govern #ed at the Wellington Hospital last night. He was a member of the Railway Service and attached to the General Manager's stall'. lie took ill last Tuesday, and on the following Wednesday was operated on for appendicitis. He was progressing favourably when he suddenly took a turn for the worse, (lying last night.' Ho leaves a widow. His people reside at Pukekohe, Auckland.
The funeral took place on Monday of Mr.- Michael Quinn. fourth son of Mrs. A. Quinn, of Trenthain, and of the lato Mr. P. Quinn, of AVostkiid. The deceased, who hail lived for some years in Now South Wales, took ill there, and was recently brought home by his mother and brother, only to die withm a short time after his landing in Wellington. Deceased was aged 42. His elder brother, Mr. Richard Quinn, died not loug ago iu Treutham.
Mr. A: M. Adams, chief executive officer of tho Munitions and Supplies .Department, is spending iv fow days in Christchurch prior to proceeding to Australia on Government business with Mr. .T. W. Collins, secretary to the Board of Trade. On bis return to New Zealand Mr. Adams is leaving the Public Service, and will 1m associated in business with Mr. C. Morton Olliver in Christcliurch.
Lieutenant J. K. Byrno, N.Z.F.A., who lias been engaged in England in assisting in tho compiling of a history of our artillery's work in the war, is now on routo to New Zealand. He is coming on tho Kia Ora, which is duo jioro about Mnv 8. Lieutenant Byrne, who was formerly on the stall' of the "Evening Post," left with the Main Body ns a sergeant un Headquarters Staff, and whilst on tho Peninsula'transferred to ( ho artillery, with which unit ho served throughout the Western front, campaign. In 1017 bo was sent to England to train for his commission, which he later secured. His brother, Lieutenant. Arthur Byrne, of tho Otagp "Regiment, is still in England, but expects to be sailing for New Zeaalud ekorlly.
■••■■"••-■• "g ■■'■ ■";; "", -■■'' ' Tho death occurred at Dunedin last week of Mr. Charles Frith, tho wellknown ex-cricketer, and elder brother of Mr. W. Frith, now of Christchurch, who represented Wellington and Canterbury years ago. Tho deceased, had been in failing health for about two years.
Mr. F. G. Button, of tho staff of tho Magistrate's Court, who has been transferred to tho Magistrate's Court at Auckland, was farewelled yesterday by members of the Court staff. Mr. W. G. liiddell, S.M., made eulogistic references' to Mr. Hutton's qualities, and on behalf of tho staff presented him with a leather sunt case. Short speeches, were also mada by Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., and Mr. l'\' V. Frazor, S.M. Mr. .T. T. Bishop, of the Auckland Court, has been promoted to AVellington, and will tnko up his duties in a few days. Mr. H.ultou is to leave for Auckland on Friday. ■ Tho funeral of (lie late Mr. Daniel Glennie, formerly assistant wharfinger for the Wellington Harbour Board, took place on Monday afternoon at Karon Cemetery. There were a number of friends present, including; tho following officials of tlie Harbour Hoard:—Mr. 11, E. Nicholls (secretary), Captain J. Dawson'(harbourmaster). Captain A. V. H. Monro (traffic manager), Mr. W. H. Probyn (assistant wharfinger),' Mr. J. E. Gamble (accountant), and Messrs. W t C. Osborne (ox-wharfinger), F. Stupplcs, (oxassistant wharfinger), and a number of tally clerks.
