POLICE CASES DESERTING SAILORS Mr. F. A r . Frazer, S.M., presided' ovei yesterday's sitting of the Magistrate's Court. A sentence of fourteen days imprisonment was imposed on George Hendrickson, a member of the crew of the schooner Elsie, who denied a charge ot having deserteci from the vessel. Ihc defendant's record showed that he had been utfient without leave whilst the ves--60l was at Tonga, and. luul been absent a number of times in Wellington, till he wan finally posted as a deserter. Hendrickson stated that he had slept on the ship every night, and was not a deserter. He had not received any orders us to work, and there were no officers on the ship. As the vessel is to leave shortly, His Worship ordered that defendant be placed on board before she -mils. On a charge of deserting from his vessel the AViu' Music, Guillnume Laurent was ordered to be placed aboard the vessel at Napier, and to pay all expenses incurred. Dct'cmlant stated that his reason for deserting was that he had a dispute regarding his pay. The Magistrate advised him to approach tho '•ompany, and endeavour lo settle the matter there.
OTHER GASES. Murdock JlacGa'gor pleaded guilty to charges of William Doran, licensee of the Pier Hotel, and Charles \ Godfrey, barman of the hotel. • Just prior to closing time on Saturday accused entered tho hotel, and, being under the influence ni liquor, hit Doran and Godfrey, who endeavoured to put i him off the premises. His Worship fined j StncGreKor 30s. on well charge. j James Brown admitted having been ; drunk and disorderly, aiul using obscene iiUiguage. He was fined J:2 tor using the language, and was convicted and discharged, ami made the subject of u pi'oliik'tioii order on the other charge. | jAluinie Neilson was' charged with ■ drunkenness, a breach of her prohibi- j don order, imd with being an incorri-; Bible rogue with insufficient lawful means of support. On ■ the two first charges ] nils was convicted and discharged, and on ■ the third charge she was committed toi tho PakatoA Home fun twelve months. One first offender for drunkenness was fined 10s, and '.three others were convicttil and discharged. . MAINTENAN-CG CASES. - Thomas William Francis, whose arrears in respectf'of ii maintenance order amounted to ■£!), was ordered to comply with the original order and pay off the arrears at the rate of ss. per week, in default one month's imprisonment. George Ireland was ordered to pay off arrears amounting to .£lO 155., at the' rate of 7s. Gd. per week, and comply with the original order or go to gaol for one. month.
Joseph l'aice was ordered to pay off arrears amounting lo £i is. at the rate ot 7s. per week, and continue to pay Bs.' per week under his order or go to gaol for fourteen days in the Auckland prism. Joseph Frederick AVilliam Stanley, whose arrears in respect of n maintenance order amounted to =£2 10s., was ordered to pay the amount off at the rate of ss. per week, or undergo fourteen days' imprisonment. Julius Tocker was convicted and ordered to pay X\ Is. :.osts, in default sev-" entytwo hours' imprisonment,'for allowing JA 3s. 3d. to accumulate as arrears in respect of a maintenance order. SEPARATION CASE. May Hramley was granted her application for separation, maintenance, and guardianship orders against John Bramk'V. Defendant was ordered to pay life, per week towards the support of his wife and children.
