KARORI AFFAIRS
ME. SKEGG'S POSITION. Sir,—Although your report of yesterday's meeting at Karori is an excellent one it does not ill together convey my . attitude towards the cjucslion of amalgamation with the city. Jly hesitation to accept nomination waa not in any way due to hike-warmness towards the scheme, but arose from diftidenco whether I should be able to till tho position to the satisfaction of those who honoured me by their promise of support. It was also portly due to tho fact that I am a very busy man, ami have not unlimited time at my disposal. However, having given my word, I shall not lack enthusiasm or energy in pushing the borough's affairs towards what seems to me the only logical solution of our many' difficulties'; The interests ot Karori are eo closely connected with city affairs that it is really pathetic sometimes to see the struggle to preserve its, own tiny individuality. We depend on the city now for our tramway service, and it'is very certain to my mind that the City Council could-give us a boiler service and make the system pay lar better than the local council could. I cannot imagine any local system of water and drainage that would be so completely and cheaply carried out as the City Council could do it. We have no catchment area and no. reservoir, and L am afraid a local scheme is too remote to be entertained. The μ-esent abomination that does duly as- an apology for drainage is a menace not only lo tio health of "Karon, but also to that of tho city It is extremely expensive, too. and the charge for the ensuing year will represent, roughly,,interest on a capital sum of .£BOOO. I believe that the City Council is composed of honourable men who would wish to deal fairly with us. and that if wo approach them in n sincere and friendly spirit, and actuated by a genuine desire to come to a satisfactory arrangement we shall not be disappointed. So far as I am coVpi-nI, if elected. I shall throw myself heart and soul into such an effort, and T r ,M confident of a, satisfactory result-^^^c..^^
