HECKLER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
AWARDED TO A I'AJIIATUA LAD. The Heckler Memorial Pcholarship, determined by the results of the Junior National Scholarship Examination, hns been awarded 'to-Jack. Arrow Graham, son of Iho late Captain John Graham, D Company, 'i'wunty-hl'th.- . liciniorccuients (formerly-resident at l'ahiatua), who wan killed in notion in France. The Scholarship entitles the -winner, ,who has-been-a- pupil at the- Palfiiit'mi"' District'"liisu. School,'to two years' at Wellington. Boys'College with board and other exue'iisoa Pftio. " .; .- The Scholarship is niado available by thu generosity of. Mr. J.- L. Heckler, of Ihur'aua, who has. presented- the Education Board with a sum sufficient to award one scholarship each year.up to 1932, a total of rather over .£1200';. The scholarship is'established in.memory of iho doiibr's late brother, Lancc-Curnonil William Heckler, of. who died of wounds in tlio'.servicc of .his country. -During these years.it will'be available for competition by the sons,of fallen soldiers. The present . competition lias been . limited to 'those, candidates whose parents' 'resided in 'the district prior to military service, but in future .examinations..any sons, of fallen.soldiers may compete' if Ihe'v have .resided' ;in, and Kayo attended a State school in, the Wellington, education' district . for.'6ix months prior to December.-.1 of the year of examination. The limit'age. is: 1-i years on that dnto. The. competition is open-to" the Maori as well as to the Euro.peau. There were on this occasion billy two candidates for the Scholarship, but the marks of the winner,. together .with the : reports on his character and work from tho school,.lie has attended, have fully justified tho award. While the Scholarship is at the present time open to the whole district, including Marlborough, the donor has stipulated that if other scholarships, Mailable for a 'limited area, should be provided lir others, then the ■ area of : the newer scholarships shall bo excluded, from, the area of competition for, the Heckler Mo-' mortal Scholarship.
