OTAGO WHEAT POSITION

A deputation, from tho Otago miliers very recently met Messrs. Stewart, Stathara, Sidey,' and Walker, M.P.'s, in conference to discuss the uosition which has arisen in connection with the Government purchase of New Zealand wheat (says the "Otago Times").. The Government fixed a lint rate -of Gs. fid. a bushel f.o.b. for all pound wheats, and the natural result has been that growers have chiefly devoted their atten-

tion to the heavy yielders. The fact . that out of 537,274 bushels thrashed up to March 31 Tuscan runs into 116,801 bushels and Hunter and pearl into 107,000 bushels fully bears out what the Minister of Agriculture was 'Warned would , happen when he adopted the flat rate. Under ordinary circumstances pearl and , velvet wheats can always be expected to : realise more than Tuscan, as they are of a hotter quality for milling. Included ' in the return of Tuscan is tho Dread- , nought typo of wheat—a soft, starchy variety quite unsuited for milling, but , a very heavy yiolder. 'As the position ' now stands, Dunedin millers are able to. purchase, sufficient quantities of Tuscan 1 but cannot secure the requisite quantities of velvet or pearl necessary for mix- ■ ing. Moreover, the Minister has decreed that so far as the Oaraaru district is concerned the millers there are to have tho first offer of the velvet grown in.that localitv. The Dunedin millers therefore -. requested the local M.P.'s to take steps to endeavour to secure them a fair proportion of velvet wheat, or that, on the ; other hand, a further shipment of Australian wheat should bo sent to Dunedin. The Otngo millers recently obtained permission to purchase several thousands of bushels of Australian wheat from a Government cargo which arrived in Auek-

land, but this cost them 2d. per bushel extra to land here. They complain that their requirements might easily have come direct from Australia, and that the purchase of wheat and its distribution by the Minister have again been badly -bungled by the Minister. The local M.P.'s have agreed to give every assistance in obtaining some relief for the Dunedin milWs, and have sent a telegram to Wellington explaining the position.
