The Hon. D. H. Guthrio will return to Wellington to-day by the Main Trunk' express, and will leave again on Monday on a vis.it to the Whangamomona district with the Hon. Sir William Prater. Before returning-to Wellington Mr. Guthrie will visit tho North of Auckland, embracing Russell, Whangaroa, Kaitaia, Kohukohu and'Kawakawa. .

The Hon. W. D. S'. Mac Donald left yesterday for' Otorohanga. He will be at Waitomo on Sunday, and' ho. is expected back in Wellington on Monday. The Hon. J. A. Hanau is at present in the Wairarapa district.

Colonel J. J/ EssOn, who has been visiting Napier, is now at Gisborne.

' Mr. Evan Parry, lately Chief Electrical Engineer to the Government, will leave Wellington by the Moana. to-morrow, en route to England.

A Press Association telegram states that tho Mayor of Auckland proposes a civic reception to Brigadier-General Richardson, who is duo in the northern city on April 29. The returned soldiers are also discussing the best means of extending him a hearty welcome.

A Waimate Press Association-message states that the Rev. J. I. Clarke took a severe heart attack on Thursday week, but was apparently in no danger and seemed to be recovering., On Thursday, about 11 o'clock at night, he suddenly collapsed and .died. Mr. Clarke was inducted in Knox . Presbyterian . Church about a year ago. He leaves a wife and family.

Mr. Arthur P. Green, who takes up the position of manager of the Auckland branch of the Bank of New Zealand when Mr. H. Buckleton comes to Wellington as general manager, joined the bank's service in 1875 at Picton. Subsequently lie was accountant \n the Wellington office. Later be became manager at Reefton, and. was then transferred to Tiinaru in .a similar capacity.. ■While stationed at Timaru he was appointed an' inspector, which position ho left to fill the managership at Dunedin. For 6ome years past ho has been again acting as one of the bank's inspectors.

..Mr. H. D. M. Hnszard, F.R.G.S., arrived at Christchurcli from Invercargill on to take up the,position of. Commissioner .of-Crown.lands for Canterbury, in succession to Mr. AV. H. Skinner, who. is retiring from the service. . . Mr. R, 11. Parton, Auckland manager for Messrs. Gordon.and Gotch, has received notice of his appointment to another position in the- head office of the company at Melbourne. Mr. AV. Baxter, of Dunedin, will succeed Mr. Parton as manager of the Auckland branch.

The death is announced by a Press Association message from Hokitika of Mr. John Robert Hudson, one of the earliest pioneers of the AVestland district. The late Sir. Hudson was born in Yorkshire, England, 7!l years ago. He went to sea as a youth, and took nart'in the Crimean War. In 1857 ho arrived in - Victoria, and was for some time engaged in gold-mining there, Mug attracted to New Zealand by the Gabriel's Gully rush, he was one of the first in the field, and afterwards visited the AVaipori and AVakamarina diggings. Mr. Hudson was the first man to cross, tho llurunui Saddle from Canterbury to the AVcst Coast with horses. Ho was the proprietor of stores and hotels on the AVest Coast at various times, and later carried on business as a contractor for the formation of roads and the construction of bridges. . He was subsequently appointed Inspector' of Roads and AVorks under the Public AVorks Department. Mr. Hudson took a live interest in all local matters, and served as a member and as treasurer of the Hokitika Harbour Board for nearly twenty years; was a member of the school committee for twenty-ono years; was for twenty years a. member of (he Education Board; and for many years i\ member of• the Hokitika Benevolent Societv. As a volunteer, Mr. Hudson was a member of the AA'cstlaiid Light. Horse, and Afterwards of the first AVestland Rilles.

Mr. AV. G. AV. Eorluno. who has been lecturing in Now Zealand on behalf of tho New Zealand Alliance, is returning to America by tho Moanu.

Mr. E. A. lleid, Government Fruit Inspector at Rarotonga, is returning to tho Islands by the Moajia to-morrow.

Mr. AV. B. Bennett, manager of tho National Cash Register Company, leaves Wellington by the M'oana to-morrow, en route to Loiidon, to tiiko up a position of manager of the company's office there. The Canterbury' Education Board has appointed Mr. Leonard L. Pcgler'as viceprincipal of (lie Christchurc.h Normal Trailing College. Mr. Peglor for tho past twelve years has been headmaster of the Hasting's District High School.—Press Assn.
