Shaw, the delegates to the recent poultry conference, presented a lengthy report, and wero accorded a vote of thanks'. A resolution was passed thanking tho Government for itß grant of £U6. Mr. Volncy Atkinson donated a sptcial prizo of £1 Is. to tho experimental'test, it was decided that the club's eggs from Juno next be auctioned through tne Canterbury Egg Circle for ono year. The president announced that the 1918-1919 competition at Papanui had closed on .Monday nisht. Subject to official revision, of the figures' the results aro:— Light Breeds.—Team competition, six pullets: 11. W. Beck, 1560 eggs, 1; Mrs. K A. Gorinski, 1518 eggs, 2; J. Liggins, 1422 eggß, 3. Light Brceds.-Singlo pen competition: Tracev King, 285 eggs, 1; W. A. Gee, 256 cgEB, 2; S. Dick, 245 eggs, 3. Heavy Brceds.-Single bird contest: E. J. Eoss,. 199 eggs, 1. Duck Contest.—Teams: T. W. Green, 1407 eggs, 1. The secretary's report stated that the club's fourteenth competition, which terminated on Monday evening, was unquestionably tho most successful series of toßts, taken as a whole, ever conducted by the club. Ninety-seven thousand four hundred and -fifty-one eggs wero laid by the 492 fowls, against 89.627 yielded by the 515 birds.on the ground last year. The Bixtytwo light breed teams gave the very flue average of 207.4 eggs per bird, and the nine- • teen light breed Bingles averaged 227 per • bird. Thirty-five per cent, of the light breed teams yielded over 1350 eggs, thus entitling them to the club's standard certificate, provided all conditions have been fulfilled. Mr. Beck (Ohristchurch) was to bo congratulated on tho sterling performance of hie White Leghorn team, 1560, which was the second beat onrecord by thhe club. - Mrs. Gorinski (Invercargill) was also to be congratulated on tho fine performance of her birds, 1518. The ducks gavo an excellent average, 1324 eggs per team, Mr. W. T. Green's (Burwood) team gaining flr6t honours. Several teams had failed. The Management Committoo recommended that H. W. Beck's team,' also Mrs. E. A. Gorinski's, J. Liggins's, and H. Williams's Minorcas in tho teams contest he retained for a further year; also Tracey King's, W. A. Gee's, and E. E. Marsden's single birds and W. T. Green's team of 'ducks.

It was decided that Messrs. E. W. Hawlto and J. H. Shaw should bo appointed to judge all the incoming competition birdß as exhibition specimens. . . The Entertainment Oommittee reported that the club's field day was a great success, also tho function tendered to the delegates to the poultry conference. Damage Caused by Long Spurs. liens, both fowl .and turkey, aro frequently injured by tho long, sharp spurs of the male bird. While tho spur was probably originally meant as a weapon of offence and defence, in the yards of tho utility man thore should be no occasion for such use. Becauao Nature has provided spurs, it dooß not follow that the poultry-breeder must submit' to the troubles so often caused. Ho is frco to removo thorn, and by. so doing benefits. Bpurs aro vory hard and tough. The best instrument wherewith to effect their removal is a small surgical saw. Bono forceps and other cutting appliances aro apt to Bplit tho horny sheath and cause pain. The saw makes a clean cut. A drop or so of blood may ooze from tho stump. Tho application of tho hot end of a. piece of motnl, such as •& poker or a soldering-iron, arrests tho bleeding, destroys any germs, and rounds off any ragged tnds left by tho saw. Cut tho.spur aB closo to tho shank as possible. Gauterising precludes further growth. Proper attention to this matter saves many hens. Valuable male birds havo perished through catching their spurs in wire-netting. Useful Medioines, etc Por Colds.—Add ground ginger, a heapod teaspoonful for six adults, to. tho wet mash. In cases of long standing give, in addition, twico daily, a tcaßpoonful of olive oil, adding two or three, drops each kcroseno and eucalyptus. s For Chickenpox.—Batho tho affected parts with vinegar and water, oqual parts,' to soften tho scabs. Dry well and then, apply, carbolised glycerino (5 per cent.); or paint with ordinary tincture of iodine. Give Epsom salts in tho mash (a packet for 20 adults), and add ono toaspoonful to oaeh quart of drinking, water. Por Scaly Leg.—Scrub well with a stiff brush and hot soapy water. Dry well and apply ordinary (saddler's), softsoap, or a mixture of oil three, kerosene ono part. Bumblofoot—This is generally caused by hard ground and injuries caused by pebbles. Incise tho parts with a sharp, clean knife, expel all /pus, etc., and then flood with tincture of iodine. Dress the wound daily with iodine.
