jBAWKffs bay Meeting CUP AVON BY BONNIE MAID. (By TolcEraph-Speeial Correspondent.! ■-.■,- •■■■ Napier, April 2. The weather was fine rnd there was a record attendance for tho Hnwke's Bay Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting... Tho course was iu excellent order. The sum of. £3.2,705 was passed through the innchine, as against .£25,497 for the -first day last your, an increase of .£7203. • The Cup wns a splendid race throughout, and the finish was one of tho finest ever seen oil the course. Kilmoon pulled up sore, and his trip to Auckland has been -cancelled. All but Juan started in the Hurdle,?, which was a surprisingly good bettiiifr race. Aurore, Sensitive, Kir .Donald, Oie ' Ore, ami First Line vere very evenly backed. Sensitive, JMavolo, and 'First ..Line were.in the van fi.r tho first inilo, \ but with six furlongs to go Sensitive and .First Line put a break on the field. Coming to, the fast fence. Aurore, who had been a long way in the rear, joined tlio leaders, and in the run to the pest life. ■ drew! away and won by a length from First Line, who was two lengths clear of Sensitive. Sir Donajd was fourth, and Oro Ore last.. St. Omc'r, Woolahra, Rr.iland, and Ivonir were withdrawn from the Welter.Handicap, leaving eight runners. Battle Array ■"wound up a good favourite,■ Master' Iney, •and , Torchlight also coming in for strong ■ support, Ethiopian w«s the .first, .away, ■but -Maraetqtara soon took charge and led down the back. At the half-mile the favourite was up to the leader,, and en-•-'..terinsr tho .straight lie vent on by'himself.. A furlong from home Greta made ■α-irush; but soon fell hack, and then Gray brought 'Torchlight on the scene. Tho paii\fought out a good finish, but the favourite hqld his ovn and won by a neck.' Master Iney was lengths away in third place, and then enme Greta. The top ..weight run-'h is best race to-date. This makes his.third.consecutive win. :-. With the .exception.of ITetoun,- all : llie : ■ well-fancied two-year-olds drew!bad "iosi- • tions in the Nursery Handicap, and the public-went solidly , for the top weight; .■■Atthe start'ho jumped oft' in front, but was soon joined by Nursing Sistoi , , and the latter led a strung-out field into the straight. Then . the favourite came away and won nicely from Nursing Sister. Bitholiacame from the ruck.and got third place, and then came Stammer, Miss Gold, and Crenides. Tho last-named ' ran a good, honest race, but it looks as . if Hetaua is tho better of the twain. Sundance started from the extreme outside.' Sho rim. a good race to the homo turn, but then faded cut, Bindle was not prominent at allTaunaha, who was making his lj.vst appearance after a long spell, was sent out a ver,v hot order in the Poukawa Handicap, while/Old Gold also carried over four figures. Lord ■' Muskerry and Gatherer were first ..into tho straight, where'tho favourite was being hardnd•don. Ho'responded to the.stick in a inost generous manner, nnd at the finish won very decisively from Gatherer, while Lord Muskerry was'close to the .second ■horse. Old Gold, who-was badly placed early in the race', finished fourth.'.The winner is engaged in the Eastor Handicap at Ellerslie; for>vhich he promises to start (t hot order. Ho is regarded as remarkably well handicapped with tlio minimum','and... incurs no' penalty for today's win. Ho is not an Busy.'ride for a light boy,"l)ut Morris, who is to have the niouut, is'more vigorous than the , majority of youngsters of his.weight. Tho Cup-was the next item, and all the acceptors but Menelauv who pulled up soro yesterday, were .paraded. Dusky Eve and Bonnie Maid'were equally :l backed favourites, while Kilmoon, Star Lady, and Sweet Corn all had big followings. In the , preliminaries nothing went better than Dusky Eve and ,S,rai- Lady. At tho start Sweet.Corn'lcd Kilmoon, Bonnie Maid, and Star Lady." This was. the-order for six furlongs', when' Star Lady was sent back...-Passing! tho fivo, furlongs Tressida moved up, and a little j later Dusky Eve joined Bonnie Maid in behind Sweet Corn.! The'.latter was'still-j in charge as they camo into the straight,, . but then gave way to Dusky Eye." Bonnie Maid- and. Kilmoon were joined by. Star ' Latly/nndthen ensued one finest ' finishes ever seen on the Hastings course. Emerson's mount, Kilriioon, was tho first to'give way, and the other trio, all-ridden with hands and heels, passed the post ' in a line. NV one could say for certain which horso had, won, and the excitement was intense until the judge hoisted his numbers. Bonnie 'Maid was on lie rails, and got the verdict-, by half a , head from Star Lady, who was on the outside: Dusky Eve. was the same' distance away third, and Kilmoon finished next. .The time, 2miii. Msec'., is a record for the course. The riders of all three placed, horsea wore seen .to advantage.
Tho Maiden Handicap w;i9 a good betting race, with War March and Hymarty and Tiiri all ■ evenly backed. Hynuirty drew the. rails, but'waa slow to begin, and , Tari, with Tho Speaker, 'led the field. Tari appeared to havo the race in hand a furlong from home, but he •weakened over tho last bit, and The Speaker won by- , a. length. Warlike came from a long way back, and finished third, while Hyniarty and War March were ' close up., '.-.•.' The Autumn Handicap, was to be the moat open event of .the day, and-.tho machine, reflected this.'opinion, a 9 all the runners wero well backed. The
start was not a. good one, nnd several of the runners gqt off badly. When tlio field settled down Kiltoss look charge, nml sho led Vagabond and a bunched field down the buck. She wns still in charge onterting tlm straight, where Love Match got up on the. inside, mid soon settled her. Then Gray brought tho topweight Klong, but iiil'lw getting tho measure of Love Match, he eased his mount:/ who stopped iiuickly under his big weight, nml in a lew strides Lovo Match again headed, him. A vigorous finish with Hie sticks saw the pair head head and head at (ilie line, and the judge awarded a dead hint. Multninc finished third, and Kiltess next. There were several dnfci'tions from tho Porangahau Handicap. SaNincf was backed down to a short price, and lio ran k splendid race, but at t'he weights lie had no chance with Chimera, who was ridden in behind, nml at the business mml won decisively. Tlio fnvoiirjto could not begin with his weight, and Demagogue led, with Torfredn. Tlie latter was first into-the. ..straight, with Nysl-.nl ami .Demos handy. Suddenly Sasnnof came fast on, the outside, and got io tho front, but Chimera finished very fast, and won decisively. Nystad was it poor third, and .then came Demos, Torfredn, and Bonny Brim , . Tho lastnamed did not shape up to expectations, and Croesus and Tigritiya. also failed Iwrily. • ■RESULTS. . i ■ 3y Tolucrnpli— Press Association.
