Lieutenant-Colonel A. W. Hogff, N.Z.M.C., Assistant-Director of Medical Services for the Canterbury Military District, is to bo transferred to Wellington shortly. He will be succeeded temporarily by Major Ci. P. Baldwin, N.Z.'M.C, of Auckland.
Owing to the postponement of the sailing date of the Niagara from Auckland until Saturday, the City Engineer (Mr. W. 11. Morton) will not, leave- for the north until the 12.45 p.m. train to-day.
A telegram lias been received I\V Colonol Porter, president of H.M. Veterans' Association, announcing the death, on Sunday last, of Captain J. Warren, president of the Gisborne branch of veterans (ami for 3!) years clerk to the Cook County Council). Captain Warren served in the Auckland Volunteer forces, and saw active service during the Maori War in Waikato in 1861-G5. Subsequently lie served in command of volunteer corps in the Gisborne district, and was a very .popular and efficient officer. In recognition of his 10n.!,' and valuable services ns County Clerk and treasurer to tbo Cook County Council, a purs? of sovereigns was presented lo Captain Warren by the council and citizens on March 2i Inst. The following telegram of sympathy has been sent from His Majesty's Veterans to Gisborne branch: "On behalf of H.M.H.N.Z. Veterans, convey to veterans sincere regrets in loss of esteemed president,-Captain Warren.' ,
Messrs. 15. J. Hightou, managing director of the N.Z. Picture Supplies, anil Mr. Bert Ruyle, representative in New Zealand for .1. C. Williamson, Ltd., are announced as candidates for the Wellington City Council at the coining election?. At the invitation of the firm, the staff of Messrs. Bannatyne and Hunter, Ltd., were entertained at dinner on Monday evening to farewell Mr. H. A. Goodwin, who is proceeding to England and America in the interests of the firm. A very enjoyable evening was spent in toasts and musical items, Mr. Goodwin leaves by tin. , Niagara from Auckland this week. Mr. K. H. Parlon, manager in Auckland for Messrs. Gordon and Gotch, has been appointed to a position in the head oftico of the company at Melbourne. Re will lenve for Australia by the Riverina from Wellington shortly. Mr. W. Master, of Diinsdin, will succeed Mr. Partoii. Mr. G. , Lancaster, senior science and mathematical master at .Nelson was at the last meeting of the Board oi Canterbury College appointed senior mathematical master at the Christchurch Boys' High School in place of Mr. \V. Walton, who has resigned the position. Mr. Lancaster, who has been at Nelson Collese for the past 14 years, is known as one of the most brilliant mathematicians and scientists who have graduated at Canterbury College. Mr, Lancaster is an old boy of the Christchurch Boys' High School. At last meeting of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College, Mr. K. <le B. Adamsou was appointen to the position of junior temporary master at the Boys' High School. The resignation of Mr. G. Jabberns as science demonstrator at the school was accepted and Jl'r. H. W. tiourlay was appointed to the vacancy. Mr. ]!. W. Morgan, who has been on the Chrisrchurch staff of the International Harvester Company since boyhood, is, in recognition of his services, being sent by the company on a four months , holiday lo America. He left Christchurch on Monday evening, and on Saturday was presented by the staff with u gold watch and pendant. Mr. Alexander Muir, who had been a resident of Invcrcargill since 1562, and who' was one of the first to establish a, business in the town, died yesterday afternoon-Press Assn. Police-Sergeant Woodley, who for the past twelve months has been stationed at Mount Cook, and is now quitting the police force in order to take up farming, was last evening presented with hand6onw gifts from friends in .the force and out of it. There was a big muster of police, and very kind things were said iil'out the retiring sergeant. Bonior-ber-geant Grean made the presentation. Mrs. Woodley had not been forgot Jen in the choosing of the gifts, and the sergeant expressed the gratitude, of himself and his wife for the kindness both had received. The death of Mr. Edward Howard Morrah. manager of the Mmenkon North branch of the Bank ot Austialasia, was announced yesterday by Presa Association message from that town. The deceased was born at Beeehwortli, Victoria, in June, 1864, and was a win of Mr 13 W. Morrali, Inspector of the Bank 'of Australasia, for. New Zealnn , !, who died at his residence in Upper AViUw Street many years neo.
