PEACE DAY

CHAIN OF BONFIRES SUGGESTED. Though Peace Day looms close at hand (if the cablegrams are to be trusted) little is being done by way of preparation in Wellington as far as can be gathered.. The Minister of Internal Affairs has outlined a three-days* celebration on certain lines, but such lines do not bind any city or borough down to tho manner in which they shall celebrate nor should they be a bar to initiation. Gin prominent citizen,, whilst deprecating tlio inertia of the authorities, suggested that Wellington was ideally formed for the display of a chain of bonfires, which could be lighted at a given time, after the manner in which the alarm was given to England when the Spanish Armada was sighted "in good Queen Bess's glorious reign.'' Commencing from Koseiieath and following the Mount' Victoria ridge along to Newtown and thence across to Vogeltown, Brooklyn Kellmrn, Northland, and Wnclestown, a perfect "chain of light" would encircle the city. With a little organisation Ngaio, Kaiwnrrii, TChandallah, Petono, Lowry Bay, Day's Bay, and Eastbourne could be induced to provide peace beacons, and "out east" the residents of Lyall Bay, Seatoun, and Karaka Say could easily be induced to play their part. This'method of celebration, it was pointed out, is highly spectacular, cheap, and effective over a big area.
