At last night's meeting of tho Fetone Borough Council tho inspector (Mr. AV. B. Gough; reported that he had been approached on several occasions by people wno seemed to l'eur a recrudescence of tho influenza epidemic, '.there was, however, no need for alarm. Only two allies, both of a mild type, had been reported in _ tlio borough. There wero otucr cases in I'eione, l>iit they were tho ordinary, and not the epidemic kind. It wa.s reported at last night's meeting of the Petone Borough Council that tho price of State coal would be advanced 2s. per ton. Newcastle coal had advanced 3s. 6d. po rton. In dealing with the matter the Mayor stated that in 1914 tho State axil cost the council 211s. Sd. per ton, in 1918 the cost per ton was 38s."dd. Newcastle eonl in 11)14 cost the council 295. 2d., in JDI'J the cost was '10s. lfld. per (on. Regarding the shortage, tho position would bo worse this winler. than last unless something was done in the matter. Ho did not think there would bo any Tai/piri slack available for household purposes this winter. At a. recent meeting of Hie Petono Labour Representation Committee it was decided not to contest tho Mayoralty, but to contest the nine seals for the council, and affiliated unions wero asked to nominate candidates for the selection ballot. Only nine candidaijes were nominated and two have sinco withdrawn. Tho committee will go before the elc-etors with tho following seven candidates:—Messrs. A. Anderson, J. L. Churchoii,;e, S'. Jenson, A. Seholelield, AV. Seddon, A. Spurr, and H. Sydow. The annual harvest thanksgiving services in connection .with the St. Augustine's Church were held on Sunday. On Saturday the church was decorated with, fruit, vegetables, and 225 jars of jam donated -by Ihe parishioners. After I lie display the produce was sent to the Anglican Boys' Home at Lower Ilutt. The Sunday services were conducted by tlio Rev. A. L. Hansell, of Lower Ilutt, in tho morning, and the Rev. IT. AVilson, of Kliandallah, in tho evening. Throughout the. services suitable choruses and anthems were rendered by the children's cho'r.
