A GRANT VETOED
PATRIOTIC FUNDS NOT TO BE USED FOE CLUBS. By Teleirapli—Press Association. Christchurch, March SI. The annual meeting of the Lady Liverpool Fund held recently passed a grant, believed to be a substantial amount, to the Beturned Soldiers' Club, which it is proposed to erect in the city. The grant has, however, been vetoed by the Hon. G. \V. Russell, with whom decision in tlieso matters rests. Explaining the position, he said it had been dociaed that no money raided on behalf of the soldiers must; bo spent on soldiers' chilis or memorials. An underlying principle in connection witfc war funds was that nil money raised should go directly to the benefit of sjoMicrs and their dcpemlant|i;. The patriotic societies in New Zealand had ,CI,70(1,000 in hand for (he benefit of soldiers, and Ihe Government did not' intend that the money ho allocated for soldiers' halls. Soldiers coming back broken in health and their dependants would require all (lie money raised. If people wished lo establish soldiers' halls they could put their hands in their pockets for that purpose. '
