A deputation .representing business interests of Otago waited on the Union Steam Ship Co. toKlay. with a request that when readjusting, the intercolonial time-table the company should bring a weekly Sydney steamer to Dunedin, thus enabling importers to get '-.'shipments from Sydney landed direct and obviating to sorno extent the delay now experienced, also extra handling and loss of time, occasioned by the transhipment of goods at Wellington. In promising that the requests would receive the fullest consideration, Mr. Holdsworth explained that war conditions still prevailed to a large extent, and several of the company's steamers were still under requisition by the Imperial Government, but lie hoped the position would become easier shortly, -two new steamers purchased by the company would be delivered next month, three other steamers had been purchased and would bo . delivered before the end of the year. Arrangements underway provide for' a direct cargo service from Sydney to Dunedin, and toot communication would be kept' up with -Melbourne. The company hoped in Hie near future to arrange for calls at Dunedin from time to time- by cargo steamers from the Pacific Coast.
