The Hon. G. W. Russell has returned from the South. Island. At last evening's presentation of prizes for rifle shooting, Colonel fcir James Allen (Minister of Defence) took tho opportunity of presenting to two soldiers decorations they had earned on the batUefield. The recinients were 22,351 Corporal D. J. Alabaster (Field Artillery-Meri-torious Service Medal, "in recognition of valuable services rendered with Hie forces in France"; and 39,533 Private 0. Hinds (Wellington Kegiment)-Militiiry Medal "for bravery in the field. _ The soMieis were honoured with uproarious applause from the large body of Senior Cadets present. Mr Finlav Bethnne, who was formerly headmaster of Jolmsonville School, has Veen appointed to succeed Mr. H. A. Parkinson in tne' headmastership of th« Wellington South School air F. J. Niß.ll has been re-elected seerotary for the .Hew Zealand Freezing Workers' Federation. Mr. T. Downing (Hawke's Bay) has been elected president. Mr. J. E. Wells, of Qkaihau, Bay of Mauds, has been appointed by Hie <-.oyernment as a member of the North Auckland Land Board. Mr. Wells who is el ..airman of tho Bay of Islands County Council, was a member of the late Auckland Land Board. Advice has' been received by Dr. W. 13. Thomas, of the Auckland University College, that his eon, Midshipman Mervvu S. Thomas, who was on the Queen Elizabeth at tho time of the surTendcr of the German Navy, has passed his examination for sub-lieutenant, and lias beon appointed to H.M.S. New Zealand, which is bringing Lord Jcllico6> to the Dominion.
