" TARANAKMOOW TO THE FUTURE DRIED MILK.AND SUGAR OP MILK
(By - Telegraph—.Special. Correspondent.) , w - Hawora, March 30. An important'representative meeting of dairy faotory directorates:: from all parte of Taranalri was hold at Hawera to further oonsderthe question of the dried milk industries, and it was decided to send two delegates _ abroad to obtain all possiblo information. Mr. A. Morton, president of tho Natibnal Dairy Association, presided, and .gave an interesting address in respect to several -valuable reports • nib.mitted. jln' discussing these. and the. possibilities , of; the industry, he said that ■■there were one or two companies in l'aranaki large enough to embark upon the industry in- ' dividually, but it would bo much better for all to combine thoir-skim .milk -powder, s which might tako, tho - placo of whole milk, and he believed the demand would inorease. War prices perhaps could, not be maintained, but the prices would be considerably above pre-war . prices. Sugar 'of milk could be mado. from whey, and therefore could bo made ' by tho. cheese or butter-factories making casein. - , Mr. C. Cooper, of Mangntoki.had visited Southland, and had prepared a report which, among other- tilings, stnted that cows' milk contained from three to four per cent, of sugar, of which they could extract approximately two and a half per cent. Thcro was further to be obtained another by-product, viz., the albumen.- They would obtain three--quarters of o, ton for every ton of cheese manufactured, and the value was .approximately JE2O per ton. The price of sugar of.-milk before the war was . less f.han ifilOO per toil, and during the war . it reached ,£6OO per ton, but it had. .now fallen again to only a little over .£2OO. .On« of the chief problems in this business was ;the huge amount of fuel, re.quired. A minimum supply of 5000 gallons of milk per day would be necessary to'carry th'fl business on suecessfully, and-- the cost of production would be considerably decreased if this ' supply could bo doubled. An. approximate estimate of the cost of manufacthe 200 tons would return about .£22,400. that it would total about <£10,000, and the. 200 tons would returnabouti22,4lo. The albumen would realise at least ..£IOOO, making a total of l , tlnis leaving them a balanco of.; over £13,000. If the present price of from-2s. to 2s. 6d; per lb. were maintained, it would bo.a; probable business for the dairy factories. ' ■ "
The committee was strongly of opinion that all sources of information''in NewZealand had now been exhausted, and if further-information was required,:-they, would 'liave to send a two or more men to America and. England, and possibly oven further afield. The patent right (for tho Dominion) of threo' different processes were already held,-and the committee unanimously agreed that tho-information should be obtained concerning other processes that might be available. Tho National Dairy Association 'urged, upon; .the: Government the establishment; of';an information bureau, and they had decided ,to send.shortly an expert (Mr. Dempster) to,; America to gather information concerning the dairy-ing-industry there.. The National Dairy '/Association, was..also sending a representative (Mr. ~T.., Brush),.,but he .was .of opinion that they would have to send a delegation further afield. In conclusion, Mr. Morton declared that Tarahaki wa3 losing at the very lowest, computation half a million sterling per year on the by-products of the .dairying 'industry. There wero big possibilities in this connection, and no opportunity for progress should he lost.
Mr. H.. D. Forsyth said 1 that the cost' of installing, a. .plant for. tho manufacture of dried 'milk'powder"had been estimated at Gs. per lb." of milk supplied for one day- in the-flush- of-the season. He described the process .of manufacture,- and suggested' the use of condensers, as small factories which would, he said, effect/a considerable saving in carting by utilising abortion of their present -plants. These condensers could be lifted up at a cost of rtboiut -£2000.! Condensed' milk '..factories.. in ; were at present obtaining "even letter returns than tho dried milk factories,' -while the sugar of mijlc businrss.'.was; considered a limited t one. Gondii ions in America wero somewhat' similar" To those of New Zealand, and he wits convinced that there were!'excellent.'prospech'for (he dairying industry-in the-Dominion: .Tie declared that tho chairman'had' under-estimated the sum Tavanaki was losing annually under the present methods adopted •According to. Mr. ,T. S. Connett, 'tho co§t of sending each delegate 'abroad would be- about .£7OO.
Tlio chairman, , in reply to a question, staled that all the companies' curitribut--ID?'t°, l ] ie expenses incurred would be entitled, to any benefits obtained: In reply to further questions, he said it was proposed that, (ho two delegates should comprise mechanical expert and ; a bu=i-nees'-man.
Several delegates considered that the adoption of ".the ili ied' milk industry would place, a..' heavjy financial burden on the cheese factories which had recent Jy-installed plants. \ Mr. W. Powdrell dcclafed that it was Juosb unfortunate that ihero wore .so many present who wero of opinion that folks should not enter tlio water iint.il the/ coul<l swim. So long as a lot of people held to that opinion so jong would stagnation reign. . ijt the close of the meeting eight companies, Teprnsenting an output of cheese .totalling 10,.(9 tons per annum, fiignifiei! their, intention of contributing to the cost ot the delegation, while many "other delegates said that their companies would nlso contribute,, but had not empowered their representatives to commit them that day. It wa9 agreed that the. maximum contribution should be fixed at 2s. per ton of cheese manufactured, tho opinion .being expressed that ,£IOOO would bo required lor each delegate.
