TEACHERS' SALARIES
A FEW AMENDMENTS. Some regulations dealing with the education servico will shortly be issued under the authority of the Minister of EduV cation. Ono of the regulations will provide for the issue of certificates to qualified teachere at the age of'nineteen years, instead of twenty-one years as at* prosent. There aro many young teachers in the service, and, altiiougii they may qualify for their certificates quite* easily at_tho age of nineteen Hey may not receive them until two years later, and in-the meantime they i-:o uncertificated teachers. The matter is important for the reason that an uncertificated teacher, hcis to submit to a .reduction of ten per cent in his salary because he is uncertificated, nnd the effect of the reg'ilivtion will be'to. remove a grievance which has for some timo been felt by young teachors who pass their examinations early in their .careers. Another regulation will jjj'oviile for the increase in tho oftlar.y of the headmaster of a normal school by ,£25 above that fixed by the Act frr his grade of: school on an average attendance basis. It has always been considered that the head of a normal school should receive this extra salary owing to the additional qualifications required uf a teacher in such a position: The print was overlooked when the regulations' were made in December last. Another amendment is to the effect that no teacher who iins served abroad with the expeditionary t'orco shall suffer, a ten per cent, reduction in his salary 1 for a period of two years after his return, on account of his having no certificate. -The object of tl is regulation is clear. It is to give (he teacher who has been away from New Zealand, and who has therefore had no chance of passing examinations,- a chance to get his qualifications after his return, and to relieve him of the penalty of a reduction (if salary when tlint has been caused by the interruption of his studies by war service. ,
