! ' SUBSTANTIAL INCREASES GRANTED 1;;. BY COURT. '' By Telecraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Marcli- 28. The Arbitration Court, in deciding the I thrashing-mill hands', dispute, stated that in view of the present cemditons in the grain-growing industry, and that 80 per ;. cent, of the grain grown in Canterbury was in part covered by an award, the : -Court wits not justified in abolishing the piece-work .system. However, to meet . the contention that piece-workers were ■ not sufficiently paid for their extra efforts, the Court provided that they must be paid at-least 10 per cent, more than ; would be earned if thoy were employed : by the hour. The old system of supplying food on a co-operative )>asi3 was rei tsiined. The award makes it clear that all workers are in the employment of tbo i mill-owner while shifting the mill. The .wages and bonus fixed represent a substantial increase on the wages paid during the previous season.
