TEACHERS' INSTITUTE
ANNUAL MEETING,
The annual meeting of the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Educational institute was held last night. Mr. A. M'Kcnzie presided. The selection of ,i delegate to represent the branch at the Town Planning Conference to he held in May was tho first business. Mr. W. 11. I*. Foster was tho representative selected. A letter was received from tho Assis. taut Masters' Association covering a reso. lution carried by that body dealing with tho recent regulations regarding pupil teachers and probationers. The effect nf the resolution was that no junior teacher or probationer should bo appointed except in the four cities, and that, they should teach only half tho day. getting all their instruction in the training colleges. At present, they aro required to teach all day, and to got their instruction from the headmaster or an accredited assistant. Another part of tho resolution suggested that probationer teachers attending university college classes should not be asked to interrupt their studies in order to sit for the D certificate. Another proposal was that bursaries might be given to teachers who had matriculated—lt was decided that the matters in.the resolution be referred to the management committee, tho committee to report to next meoting ,of tho institute. The chairman, moving the adoption of the annual report, referred to the failure of some teachers, especially younger teachers, to recognise the good work done in past, years by the institute. There wore still a number of them who were not members, and ho would urge tliem to join up as soon as possible. Tt would strengthen the hands of the institute.

The election of officers for the ensiitti;* year resulted as follows:—President, Mr. 0. N. D'aslam (unopposed); vieenrosi. dents. Miss Achcson and Mr. A. M'TConzie; management committee. Miss Ugglcton. Messrs. TT. T). .Pritcliard. W. AY. Rowntrep. and Iv. C. Pcltham: treasurer, Mr. J. C. Burns; secretary, Mr. W. B. Brown; auditor, Mr. C. Bary. Mr. M. Kean nronnsed that in ordet to facilitate the collection of subscriptions to the institute, the. board be attain asked to inalio tlio collection by deducting the subscriptions from salaries.—Tho motion was agreed to. Mr. Pritcliard moved that the branch protest against (tic action of the Govern, nient in depriving the teachers of tho extra bonus (paid to other Civil Servants). fJins making the recent, increase in salaries of teachers almost nugatory: and that in view of the fact, that it was authoritatively staled that the double bonus would bo paid, tho Govern•ltent be asked to redeem its promise,—Tt was decided after discussion that the matter be referred to the management committee, with power to act.
