NOTES FROM VARIOUS CENTRES . MANAWATU NOTES The Palmerston North Municipal Band held its animal meeting on Thursday night. In moving the adoption of the annual report, Mu. J. A. Nash, ALP., who was in the chair, said that the band was in a very satisfactory condition, there being a credit balance of .tBl 10s. Tho band had given every satisfaction so far as the Borough Council was concerned, although owing to tho bad weather and the recent epidemic, more frequent performances on tho Esplanade could not be arranged. Tho report stated that the amounts received from paid engagements during the year totalled ,£157 13s. Gd., as compared with Mi 2s. Od. received the previous year. The Borough Council had again granted a subsidy of .£IOO. During the past year the band had given 51 performances, and had held 78 practices. There were no liabilities, and tho assets were valued at. .£791 18s., exclusive of cash in hand to tho amount of .£sl 10s. (id. Tho following officers were elected for the current .rear:—Patron, Air. Piesso, Edge, O'Reilly. Canton, Park, and Broad. Headed by the Municipal Brass Baud many Dannevirke residents turned out on Thursday afternoon to welcome home the following soldiers:—Surgeon-Major W. C. Hartgill, M.C... Flight-Major George Haft-gill. 2nd Lieutenant Alex. F. Gilmore, M.M., Privates W. Boughay, J. Marshall, ITiggins, D. H. Larsen, E. Burton. The Dannevirke Returned Soldiers' Association intend holding a series of winter dances, the first on April 9, and tho second on May 7. Tho Dannevirke Epidemic Relief Committee has in hand a credit balance of .£127 ss. lid. Messrs. Bickford, Dobson, Husband, Herbert, and Thompson, have been appointed a special committco to disburse this. Rata Station, at Te Uri, Ormondville, was sold by auction this week. The freehold portion, 935 acres, went to Mr. K. Petersen, at £9 12s. an acre, while tho leasehold of 1907 acres was bought by Messrs. Danpney Bros, at M 12s. Gd. an acre. Mrs. Herrick, of Pinfold Road, Woodville district, has received advice of the death of her son, Private Norman George Herrick, which occurred in a Kentish hospital. Deceased left with the Twentysixth Reinforcements. John Howard, of Woodville, late liverystable keeper, has been adjudged a bankrupt. A meeting of his creditors which was held this week was adjourned for tho preparation of a statement as lo the bankrupt's financial condition. Lectures on home nursing have been resumed by the Pahiatua branch of the St. John Ambulance Association. The Pongaroa dog trials, an annual fixture, will be held earlv in Anril. The Kia Tea Rugby Football' Club, of Palmcrston North, held its annual meeting on Thursday night. Tho club won tho local competition last year, and tho prospects for tho coming season are bright. Good progress is being made in tlio construction of Hie new hospital buildings at Palmerslon North, Tlio contractors, Messrs. Trevor Dros., have the breastwork wel lin hand, and Hie boilers required for tho steam heating and power system throughout the establishment aro now on tha ground. ( A cricket match was played at Palmerston on Thursday between the Wanganui: Technical College and (ho local High School boys. Palmerston batted first, ami showed comparatively poor form, being disposed of for 98 runs, largely owing to the excellent bowling .of Gilbert! and Ilichdale. Wanganui, however, did worse. Their innings was a procession, and all of their wickets fell for 27 111ns. In the second innings the batting of both sides showed improvement. The Hodder Bros. (2) went in first for Pnlmei'ston, and gave a first-class display, scoring freely all round, the wicket to tho tune of 89 runs without loss. Palmerston then declared, and Wanganui indulged in a second innings. They notched a total of 57 runs, Gilberd (31) being the most successful batsman. Palmerston thus won by lfl-f runs. Of the bowlers, K. Hodder did deadly execution, semiring four wickets for no runs in the first innings, and four for 12 in the second.
WAIRARAPA ITEMS A party telephone line has been established between Mastcrton and the Lower Taueru. A champion of champion singles match in connection with the Wairarapa Bowling Centre was played in Masterton on Thursday. The final was between Wnlden (Groytown) and Pollock (Martinborough). The latter, who is an old Newtown player, won by 25 points to 13. Mr. C. Ifeid, of Clareville, has been i«lvised' that his eldest son, Lieutenant Norman Eeid, is returning homo by the Tainui. Eeginald Devonshire, a young married man, and formerly teller in the Bank of Australasia, was committed for trial yesterday on 6ix counts of stealing moneys belonging to the bank. The aggregate amount involved is about ,£B2O, and the thefts are alleged to have extended over a period of two years. .The method employed by the accused, a.s stated by tho police, was to hand slips to customers for moneys deposited, end to destroy tho counterparts of tho slips, so that tho deposits were, not entered in the ledger; when the account of the customer became low, a sum of money would lie deposited j1 >y the n ..cased to I uieet cheques that were issued. Word lias reached Mastorton that Corporal .T. D. M'Larcn, son of the late Mr. Donald, M'Laren, who was previously reported missing, is now reported as killed in action on October 2fi, 1918. The deceased was 29 years of ago. The Rev. .T. A. Hosking is leaving Masterlon for 'I'reutbam next week. Carriers doing business at. tho Mas(erton /rAilway station are now required to pay threepence if they secure the services of railway servants to weigh their I goods. Important improvements to the pavilion at the Maslerton Bowling Club's green are contemplated. A. Maslerton builder told a reportor that tho cost of erecting dwollings had nearly doubled during the last ten or fifteen years. He pointed out, however, that people aro not satisfied to-dnv with the conveniences that wore provided n decade ago. A number of Territorials were fined in I the Magistrale's Court at Mastcrton 01, Friday for failing to attend drill. The juvenile dancing classes instituted by tho Wairarapa Caledoninn Society are •being well patronised. Two Feathcrston soldiers, Privates A. Tail and A. Davis, returned homo on Thursday afternoon and were met by the Mayor and Mayoress. At u'catherston on Thursday Dr. A. K. A. Palmer and family wore tendered a public farewell.
