RANGITIKEI RACES - STAR, LADY WINS THE CUP. By Telegraph—Special Correspondent. v ;■ Bulls, March 2G. For the first day of the Rnngitikei Racing Club's meeting there was splendid ■weather, and the track was in • good order. The attendance was largo... The totalizator receipts amounted to J£2a,sffl,. againat ,i;20,0 ( J7 for the corresponding «ay of the last meeting, an increase of d; 5771. There was a very bigl field in the Trial Hack Handicap, biit the investing public confined its uttontion t» Vance and Omahu. Vance was early in the lead, and at oue stage had a big break, but Ji'Arten eased liw. and bub won pulling up. Papanui, who was'second, : was well clear of Omahu, and tho next to finish were Rnilaud, Kyoto, V-olita, and Bold Boy. Tlie iorm of tho Vinner has.been consistent, and' hor win 'was well merited.
All started in the Scott .Memorial Handicap. Inab, who. drew tho inside, and had Gray in tho saddle, was a very short-priced favourite. Her backers appeared to be unlucky npt to collect the first dividend, as after- leading all the way with Madam Ristori, and resisting challenges from the latter and Starpiigo, she succuriibed in the last stride to ',Hnstip, who finished very strongly." ..Many held that over-confidence lost. Gray the race. Madam , Eistori wa.s a neck away, and Play-off next. . ■ ;; f
The withdrawal of Vacuum, Moutoa Camp, and Rio.left twelve starters for. the Hack Hurdles, for which Whiro was'favourite. Ho did'not begin as well as usual, but *as soon in,'front,. and with■'Movement led for. a mile. . -The faulty jumping o.f the latter bea.t her, , and Whiro went'oh by, himself. At the turn for home he -v/as challenged by Willys Knight and Khatmandu. In a great finisli the favourite won by a-neck, with Khatmandu a head in front of Willys Knight. Yankee Jack,' who ran well throughout, was close up fourth, and Gunwale finished next; .After ihe race, Mr. N. Short, owner of the' wniner, was' presented with a bracelet, doy nated by Mr. D. Coughlin. .. ■
Pomeroy was the only scratching, in the Carnarvoii* Hack Race, for which' Borealis,, Hallow/ and Endure were backed in that order. Tho start was,a. perfect one, but the favourite was soon' cut , out and'se'nt back to last. Zela" led Nemaline into tho straight' Jut. in the iun home tho fav.ourite catoe fast, ! and in a close he got the 'verdict.' by a very narrow ui'argin' from Zolst. Nemaline was , close up, third. I Hallow got stopped once, ana ..'will do lulot better in his'next outing:""..',..- ...

All started but Simon in the Hack "Welter Handicap, and though burdened with' the, big impost/of. lOst. 91b. tho public (preferred Sonnino, to Moutoa Ivanova, the pair being the best backed. Compel was the. first to show out, but Sonuino soon, ran to .the front. At the end of five, furlongs .Teonpo took' charga and led into.the straight. Here the two favourites challeifged him, and; after a 6harp tussle Moutoa Ivanova., gained the verdict by. a neck from .Tempo,-while.' Idle Talk, who finished fast, ;was only a. neck away third.
