Weather conditions were distinctly unfavourable for the meeting between the Poverty Hay and Manawntu cricket elevens', which took place at Palmerston. The wicket, was very greasy, and ram interfered' with the play. A feature of J n rather one-sided game was (he good fielding on the par! of both elevens. It was a one-innings match, and being older (mil more experienced, the visitors had little difficulty in winning by IB runs. The teams were:—Poverty Bay: J Mill, W. Blair, C. Reeves, T. Perc, J Oates, D. Miller. W. Oates, K. Barton, ,T Scholium, A. Coonvbe, W. Aitkhison. Manawiitui: Greer, Eglinton, Ongley, M'Vicar, Pegden, M. Ilodder., Mulliiis, K Hoddev Slonrad, Lcet, and M'Lachlan. Batting first, the visitors opened , to the bowling of Ongley and M'Vicar. The first wicket was captured at a. cost of 18 runs, and the second fell when 6f> had been secured, and the third at 73. , The play was marked by some fast mid open hitting by Miller, to the tune of 78 runs. At the luncheon adjournment 'the visitors had notched 202 runs, and the price paid was nine wickets. On re-1 Binning thoy put. on another 21 runs before being finally disposed of. Greer aim M'Vicnr were the most successful inimllprs for Maimwatu, the former taking three wickets for 10 runs, and the latter four for 79. Manawatu sent Greer and Eglinton to open their scoring account, but in the first over Eglinton and Ou"lev (who followed) were caught m ♦he dips by Mill. M'Vicar filled the breach, but' his partnership with Greer (the captain) lasted only till the score reached Iβ, when the latter was cau»ht and bowled by Coombe. Pegden then entered the lists and registered top score, "1 He was eventually cauu'ht by CoombD in the slips. 11. Ilodder followed, and ho made a stand with 20 rums, at which figure he was caught in the slips. The remaining batsmen formed a procession, and the innings closed for 94 runs. Scliollum took four wickets for 20 runs; Atkinson five for 15j and Coombe, one for 27.
