SOLDIERS' BURSARIES

»- :— lAPPLICANTS' CLAIMS TO BE INYES- ; . TIGATED. At yesterday's meeting of the executive committee of the War Relief , Association a request was received from the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon &. W. Russell) regarding the matter of considering the claims of applicants for soldiers' bursaries. The request was conveyed in a telegram which Jiad been dispatched by the Minister to the different centre 3, couched in the following terms"Regarding National War Funds' Council bursaries. In view of the immediate opening of university terms' I would, be glad to know if your association will assist the council by reporting, firstly as to the suitability of the applicants for the course selected, and secondly the financial position of the applicant and of the parent or guardian. In order to assist your association each applicant will present himself to your sub-commit-tee with a, 'medical certificate and report from the Registrar of the University or from the headmaster, together with a statement of his financial position, with endorsement by parents as to tho extent they will be able to help the applicant. Eight awards have, been made for your district subject to particulars regarding which your valuable assistance is invoked." It was moved by Mr. G. Shirtcliife and seconded by Mr. J. Hutcheson that the following committee be set up to investigate the suitability of the applicants for the. course selected and: the financial position of the parents or'guardian, and to report the result of such investigations to the council:—Messrs. W. H. L. Foster (headmaster Clyde Quay School), J. P. Firth (principal, Wellington College), A. Veitch (of Messrs. Veitch and Allan), C. Watson (chairman Victoria College Council), and J. M'lntosh (public accountant). The motion was carried.
