Captain K. J. Harvey, who has juet retired from the command of the Queen of the South, has probably had more experience of the Cook Strait trade out of ft el-, lington than any other living Bhipmaster. He has, with the exception of one year durin" which he traded out of Auckland, been engaged in the Wellington-Foxton and Welliuston-Wangamii trade since tho year 1877. He came out to New Zealand as an A.I), in the ship England, hi 1870, and after serving as mate of the Kongatari and Manawatu, was promoted to bo captain of tho liitter vessel (then tho property of tho old New Zealand Shipping Company), and renntined in. that post for six years. Tliis vessel- was a, paddle steamer trading between Wellington una Wangamii. He was aftorwards l'laccrt. in charge of the Itengatari. In 1889 ho was sent across to Australia to purchase a vessel for Messrs. Loviu and Co., and had tho good fortune to buy the Queen of the South, then a-vessel. thirteen years old which .was trading up the coast bctweou Sydney and Brisbane. It says a good deal for this steamer that she io ■ still being driven by the same set of ensnuos as when sho was brought over to New Zealand. :Her present boiler m the third sho has had. during her- New Zealand career. Later on the same proprietary had Ihe Himitangi built, and Captain Harvey took charge of her for a time on her arrival, Captain Mauley taking charco of the Queen of the South. 'Later on Captain Harvey resumed command of the Queen of tho South, and retained that position up to the date of lUb retiroKce'pimr up to schedule the C.-I) steamer Port Melbourne, arrived at Napier yesterday morning from 'Hokomarii Bay.
