Another pioneer settler of tho Dominion, Mrs. David Henderson, died in Masterton on Sunday a.t the age of 81 years. Tho deceased, who was a native of Aberdeenshire, settled in' Canterbury with her husband many years ago. The late. Mr. Henderson was afterwards in partnership with the Hon. Thomas Fergus in the construction of the Mosyiel railway, and subsequently took contracts on the Manawatu and. AVairarapa'. lines. Mrs. Henderson leaves a family of three grown-up sons.
A return match between the Manriceville uud Martinborough Kifle Clubs, fired on Saturday, resulted in a win for the former by 723 lioints to ,698. Tho champion pairs competition in connection with tha Mnsterton Bowling Club was concluded on. Saturday, and was won by Ewington aud H. Perry. An application io being made to (he Government to provide a war rolic to be placed in close proximity to the proposed soldiers' memorial at Foathorston. The funeral of the late- Mr. James Elliott, of iMasterron, look place on Sunday afternoon. Tho cortege was very lengthy, hundreds of residents and old settlers paying their last tribute to the memory of one who had been an honoured and trusted citizen. A landau following the hearse was lillcd with beautiful . wreaths.
Prior to the opening of business in the Masterton Supreme Court on Saturday morning, the members of the legal profession attended to congratulate Mr. P. L. Hollings upon bis beiujj appointed to the Magisterial Bench. Messrs. K. K. Jackson, H. C. Bobinson, Sergeant Miller, and S. L. P. Free, S.M., spoke in terms of praise of Mr. Hollings's splendid qualities, and congratulated him upon tho well-deserved appointment. Sir. Free eaid the town had shown ito confidence in him as a man by electing him Mayor, his clients hnd shown their confidence in 'him as a lawyer, and now the profession desired to express their confidence in him, as a Magistrate. Mr. Hollings suitably rfeturncd thnnke. In the Masterton Divorce Court yesterday decrees nisi were granted in the cases of Eomanos v. Eomanbs, 'husband's Sstition on the grounds of adultery, and irnke v. Drake, on the grounds" of desertion.
A case in which Evelina M'Laren applied in the Supreme Court at Masterton for revocation of the will of Neil M'Laren was adjourned to Wellington foe legal argument. A licensing appeal case, Taplin v. Miller, was dismissed.
