The viotories of Snub in-the Governor's Plate and King's Plate at Flemington will go u .long way towards pnying expenses in Australia' lor Mr. \V. R. Kemball's team. The Mnsterton sportsman has always been regarded as a iavourite of fortune, end it was certainly a lucky day for him when ho-sent Snub to Melbourne. The 'distance races at Flemington were easy to win tliis autumn, as. the besfcf the stayers were not at tile meeting. Snub is a good stayer, and is always hard to beat in a small field. Mr. Kemball's earnings at Vtcmingtoii totalled 1422 sovs.
The Woodvilie trainer, S; \V. Tatham, has sold Orleans (Conqueror-Jeanne d'ArcHo Mr. C. T. Keeble, of Palmerston Sort!).- Orleans, who will bo an addition to T. George's already strong team, will be prepared for hurdie racing. A recent addition to 33. Watson's Awapuni team is the two-year-old Olynthus (Demosthenes—Etona), who has been purchased by Mr. C- Louisson. of Palmerston North]
Jockeys. L. Morris and R. Eeed each rodo three winners A the Masterton Meeting on Saturday.
Discussing a visit to the stobles which shelter The Panther, one of the favourites for file English Doruy, an English writer pens the following:—"The Panther, of. course, is the swell of the party, and although he. appeared to be running up a bit. light in Iho late autumn he has filled out .nicely since, and bids fair to make up into a grand three-year-old. It was all to his advantago that he was indulged with an easy time ;is a two-year-old, and afforded every chance to develop. He bears much of the character of his eire, without being of quite eucli massive build, i>n<l there is no luck of quality, while his fiction is remarkable for freedom and power. All is going well with. ■■ this handsome horse, .which"may, after all, yiove himself worth tho reserve placed on Liui when he passed through the Halo ring last back end. The reason for this extravagant (igiiio
was that his owner did not desire iu sell, but only to put a period to rim olVer:, with .which he had been assailed privately. If The Panther turns out tin , t,'<".<.'d
horso ailticipntcd liis valuo is 'largely enhanced by the restoration of. raeir.j'lo normal conditions,, as iiis er.mispini'i-r? include the Two Thousand, Newmarltel; Stakes, Derby, and SI. I.eger this y.'.ir, and tTie Eclipse and .lockey Club Slakes next." The Auckland horsemen, li. I>eley and \\: Jiyan. vill both lis riding at Gisborne this ivei'. .11. Gray will !;e at Bulls, as will the two Ilpuds. C liinprson has goho to Invercargill to ride this week. .
So fnr, says nn Auckland ■writer, nothing hns been made iiiiblio as to whellier thf) Hamilton Racing Club intends appealing against the District Committee's decision in upholding the appeal of Mr. K. W. Alison, jiinr. 'i'lio club have a. month to lodge nn appeal.
According to the Melbourne correspondent of the. Sydney "Daily Telegraph," Mr. .1. Gore, the well-known Indian shipper, offered Mr. G. I). Greenwood COflO guinea!) a. few weeks ago for Gloaming, on behalf of a Bombay sportsman. Mr, Greenwood, however, put a
price of 10,000 guineas on the fion of The Welkin, and no business resulted. Had Gloamiug gone to India his meeting with Dark Legend (tho Viceroy Cup winner) next season would have aroused worldwide sporting interest. Old' Gold, who distinguished himself as a double winner at tho Wairarnpu Meeting last week by Mlcnciug the respective fields in tho Trial Handicap and Makatu Handicap, can lay claim to a podigroo of quite a lluc-bioodcd character. His sire, Hymottus, was got by tho celobrated Cyllene (son of Bona Vista), while his dam, Florigold, was got by Florizel II (son of St. Siiwm) from Gold Paste, by Alfho.tas— Maccarpnca, by Macavoni'f.rom Bonny Bell, by Voltigcnr from Queen Mary, by tiladiateur. If Old Gold is not heard of to greater advantage ho will greatly belie his breeding. Old Gold , wae bought at tho salo of tho late Hon. J. D. Ormond's horses for 45 guines. Some people are prone to declare that tho hacks in the Dominion at the present timo ' are a weak lot. However, Taiamai. Statuette, Rohekah.Bon Spec, Gay Lad, and Taunaha aro a pretty good hal'f-dozon tlint will hold their own in open company. • ■ ■ ' ... Encouraged by her success over- a middlo distance at Napier, Mr. J. H. Colebourno has engaged Sweet Corn in' TTie Hawke's Bay Cup, in which she has been. weighted at Sst. She also figures in the open sprint event with 9st. 81b,, and will probably start in this .race. Snsahof is also engaged.in Ixitli races. Battlo Song and Bonnie Maid iiavo been scratched for the Great Autumn Handicap, a Press Association message from Christchurch states. • A Press Association message from Marton states that All Over -has been scratched for 'nil 'engagements 'at the Rangitikei' meeting.
