100 YARDS
Under the combined auspices of the Wellington Amateur Athletic Club and the Victoria College Amateur Athletic Club, a spurts meeting was held at the Basin Jtaerve on Saturday afternoon. Although threatening, the weather held line, enabling the meeting to be concluded successfully. Towards the end of the day, however, the wind came ap piercingly ooUl from the wui'li, and a few drops of ruin. fell. There was an excellent attendaneo of the public, who thorough!}' enjoyed the line sport A telegram was received from His Excellency the Croi-er-nor-Genernl (the Earl of Liverpool) expressing regret that his presence in Christchiirsch prevented him from being at the gathering, but trusting that Uie spoils would' bo a success. It is five years since «m ,athletic meetin? was held in Wellington, and the auspicious nature of Saturday's gathering augurs well for the fiiLiiri? of the sport. The entries in all 'tiie events of a very liberal progrmnnio ivore numerous, and the competition in the six provincial championships was very keen. The track was in excellent order. University), 5G l-'isnc. The final for the 100 yards championship was very closely contested, Barker winning by only a foot from. L. A. Tracy. G. Heley, who won the first heat, finished third. Barker won the event in one-fifth of a second longer than the standard time—lo Msec.—and ho became the holder of the Guise Cup. 'Hie \\n of E. J- Bell in the one-mile flat was a popular ono, and ho covered the distance in <imin. 51 Msec. Ten entries had been received for this event, but six intending competitors withdrew b&fore the. race commenced. Starting from scraloli, Bell also won the three-mile run handicap. Barker had no great difficulty in annexing tin: 220 yards -championship in 24sec. G. Hcley was runner-up, and finished some considerable distance behind Barker. It was bo remembered. liOKWer, when speaking of Holey, that he had the. misfortune to have a leg broken at dm front, and that ho has been away for over three years. The programme also comprised a. number of events for Ik>vs, and in all of them the greatest interest was evinced, tli* competition being Rood. During the afternoon an exhibition of no!e-va.nßins was given by G. Harvey, of Masterlon. who succerdcl in cro>si'«; tli« bar at a heisht of Oft. 3ii>. The Wellington Patriotic Society's Band was in attendor.i'C, and rendered selections at intervals.
