WOMEN'S WORK DURING THE WAR
A MEMORIAL. The Women's Work Sub-Committee of the Imperial War Museum is a committee which deals in matters of all-absorb-ins interest, for its aim is the collection of object, photographs, and records concerned with, women's work during the war, states the "Daily Mail." It is a stupendous undertaking, for women's war work comprises much that has never before been considered women's work. The war has tried' and proved women's capabilities, and has shown what they cau achieve. men's section of tho Imperial War Museum will prove an enduring memorial, which will need living up to in the years to come. The ]lon. Lady Norman, C.8.E., is the chairman of the sub-com-mittee, which includes such representative names us that, of Miss Conway, M.8.E., the hon. secretary, Miss Durham, C.8.E., and Lady Askwith. C.B.E.
The collection of documents and records which is being .■iccumnliitcd covers women's work in the auxiliary and medical services, in munitions, in general industry, in canteen work, in hospital supply depot work, and ..every, other possible, phase of war work. In this connection the lion, secretary will ho delighted to receive at i) "Queen. Anne's Gate, Westminster, S.W. 1, any reports, and photos of individual war workers whose special service may not yet have been recorded.
A more or less complete; photographic record, as well as pVister models, pictures, and drawings,. has been, , and is being, acquired tq illustrate-the "work done, and many women : artists' liave therefore an opportunity to do work which will be'purchased by the nation.
Tho museum will contain models of creches and other objects descriptive of the relief work which, ras been carried out in various occupied.countries; specimens of all the different .uniforms .worn by women, n collection of munitions, including a model of .'"iiii" aeroplane''[engine the greater proportion of which- has been made by voirisn'; , and industrial exhibits, such as protective clothing:', examples of electro-pla'ing, and other industries -which have been taken up by women lo release men for the firing line. There will also be a memorial section dedicated to tho Gp women who have lost, (heir lives on war eei'viee, as , well as copies of nil decorations gained by women, together with a list and- possible photographic record of their recipients. Moreover, ,a record ef some 1200 ivar ;charities; with which wqineii have been mainly connected has already been compiled, as wpII us one of over MOO "home" hospitals, : • :. ,\ . The founding of women's organigitions abroad lias, perhaps, been thu most remarkable feature of women's war work, for this has been pioneer work and hiss entailed almost innumerable difficulties to be surmounted.
Toniporary exhibitions will hike place from time to time until the museum is erected. The ' first cue was hold last autumn at AVliitechapcl, and -vns visiled l>y 80,000 people, surely » 'foveninner of tho nation's tribute, which will be paid to tho nation's workers.
