WORKERS' DWELLINGS
* HARBOUR BOARD RESOLUTION I
MINISTER OF LABOUR REPLIES
A resolution passed by the Wellington Harbour Board and published last month placed on record "the extreme regret of the board that the Government had not given it authority to provide its workers with homes/'. According to the hoard, the Government "appeared to bo blocking its efforts to do part of a pressing national work."
The Hon. W. H. Ilerries, Acting-Min-ister of Labour, has authorised his Department to give out the following explanation: 'Tho Government has not, as alleged, been neglecting the matter. In October, 1917, a renuest was made, by a deputation from the Wellington Harbour Board that provision should be made for tha board to erect workers' dwellings for its employees. Tho Right Hon. Mr. Masscy immediately gave instructions to the Crown Land Draughtsman to prepare legislation to meet tho wishes of tho board. The drafting was carried out, when it was found that tho Wellington board desired tho provision to cover all harboui" boards in New Zealjuul. As no board outsido of IVollingloji lmd niudo a request to the saino effect, the matter ■was held over, and time was given for tho other boards to make representations. None, however, ayaijed themselves of the opportunity thus afforded them.
