London, March 21. The Press Bureau -has issued a statement by the Board of Trade showing that the average earnings of the railwaymen in 1913 were 28s. (id. weekly. Additions since February, 1915, totalled 335. weekly. . Tlio increased cost of operating the. railways, duo to war wages and the eight-hour day, was .£75,000,000, plus increase in the cost of materials. Jt is estimated that tho cost of the new pi'&jramme of tho railwaymen's unions,' including tho perpetuation of tlio war waxes, will be at least .£100,000,000 annually, or 200 per cent, over prewar rates. •

The Government's offer when the negotiations were resumed yesterday afternoon included tho establishment of a joint committee representing the Bailway Executive and two of the unions _ to deal with' questions of pay and conditions of service as they arise. The Governments offer assures the raibvaymen of a continuance of their present earnings dur-ing-the current year, instead of their .having to face a gradual reduction o£ war wages as the cost of living falls. Tho offer will necessitate an increase of the railway rates, but it is hoped that any further increase in passenger fares will bo unnecessary.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.-Eeuter:
