LIBERALS EXCITED. • (Rcc. March 19, 11.50 p.m.)
London, March 18. The West Leyton result lias caused excitement in political circles. It is believed that such a turnover of votes within. three months of a general election is unprecedented. The Independent Liberals aro jubilaait, and rogard it as marking a turn in tho tide, especially as it follows a greatly-reduced Coalition majority at the West Derby by-election. Government circles admit surprise, but their supporters consider that tlio result merely is due to the tactical mistake of selecting a candidate of markedly Conservative r.ntecedcnts; also the Premier committed an error of judgment in giving him his official endorsement. In some quarters favourable to tho Government it is believed that tho result is likely to terminate or modify the coupuu system—Aus.-k./i. Cable Assn.
