• EXPLANATIONS IN THE HOUSE OF LORDS : SITUATION WELL IN HAND By Telegraph—l'rcas Association— Copyrijht (Eec. March 19, 9.50 p.m.) London, March 18. Lord Curzon, speaking in the House of Lords, in tlio course of an official explanation of the riots in Egypt, said that « deputation of Nationalists called at the British Presidency and advocated complete autonomy, leaving Britain only the right to supervise tlio public dobt, the Suez Canal, and the shipping. The L'rimo Minister and the Minister of Education declined an invitation to visit London unless the Nationalist leaders were included. The Ministers resigned, and tho Nationalists endeavoured to .prevent the formation of a new Ministry. Tho Sultan appealed to the High Commissioner for protection and thereupon four Nationalist leaders were arrested nnd deported. The riots which followed in Cairo awl elsewhere were organised chiefly by students, aided by tlio town riibbie. There were some casualties, and a few- of tho looters were shot.
