OFFICIAL FIGURES MISUNDERSTOOD. "I notice the Goyernment. Statistician Calculates the increase in the cost of clothing at 18 per cent.," wrote a correspondent whose letter • appeared in The Dominion on Wednesday.' "If he had a wife and family, he would rapidly discover that it was nearer 130 per cent." The Government Statistician (Mr. Malcolm Eraser) remarked yesterday that this correspondent evidently had "mis-, read the published figures. The Department had not stated that the increase in the price of clothing was 13 per cent. As a matter of fact, it had. not gathered information on this point, and had not made any estimate of the increase at all. What the Department's figures did suggest was that 13 per cent, of the income of an average family was spent on clothing and drapery, the other items being 34 per cent, on food, 20 per cent, on housing, 5 per cent, for fuel and lighting, and 28 per cent, on other items, including amusements, These percentages -were not increjsesj but simply proportions. • -
