AT PITCAIRN ISLAND

M INFLUENZA EXPERIENCED,

Owing to engine trouble the War Ojjal, ooiv- in port, made a atop when within hve miles of Pitcairn Island (on the voyago from New York via the Panama Canal). •Whilst lying there on February 22 a tat put off from the historically interesting island (associated in the mind of every boy with the story of the mutiny of the Bounty), in which were Mr. Gerald Bromley Christian and his father, Mr. A. ■Downs Christian. Mr.,.Gerald Christian, ,who is the chief Magistrate of the -island, reported-that the population of Pitcnirji Island was now 178. All was going well with them. . No .sickness was being experienced save for occasional colds due to sudden changes in the weather, and the island had not been visited by influenza. The islanders were very pleased to learn that the peace proceedings were going on satisfactorily for the Allies and that an early and permanent peace for the world was in prospect. The .War Opal received a liberal donation of lovely oranges and bananas, and some members of the ship's company secured some extraordinarily fine shells, the lustrous sides of which were ombellished with floral paintings, showing that art has' its votaries even on that lonely ocean spot, Pitcairn Island.
