Inquiries made concerning the present shortage of coal, through which the supplies to different industries aeem to have dropped well Mow the safety margin, liavo brought forth tho following ■ statement from an Auckland coal company:~ "The Department is curtailing tho sup. piles of trucks to tho coal mines, thereby seriously reducing the output. At the present time there aro largo numbers of the larger wagons that tho Department lmvo seated and covered for regatta and race traffic. The output at present being obtained from each of thn 'three Waikato mines has ken much below normal since November last, principally duo to tho number of men wiio had recently left off working as coal miners. Also a largo number of coal workers usually take up other occupations in the summer months, the result is a diminished output, and each faeIfirv freezing works, and other intlus by' is at the'nresent time badly in need of'supplies. The Munitions Department has been pressing -*ach company to lhcrcaso its output, nnd if is to bn regretted that the Fftilwny Department is unable to give coal mines preference uf supplv of trucks, which, in Ihc interests of-the essential industries of tho country would at. present be highly justified.''
