GIPSY''GEM WINS Tllli CUl'. (By Telegraph—SpectaJ Correspondent.) New Plymouth, March 17. The Opunake races wore lieiil to-day in. fine weather before a liirjjo crowd. The opening event fell to Movement 1 , the black inure scoring at her first attempt over the fences. > To Toa and Halcyon ran n dead heat in tlio Maidou Mate. To Toa had a good break cominj,' up the straight, but Price eased up and. the horse bore out awav from the crowd. This let Halcyon up on .the rails and Corlett got him along in timo to dead heat. Halcyon did not get the best of the start, mid appears to bo a fair sort. Pnraoa was mado a very warm favourite in the Cup. Ho ran a good race, hut had iio chance with tlio light-weight, Gipsy Gem, who led from end to end. Trombone ran a surprisingly good race in third place, hut Dinglo'finished well back. 1 ' '
The Electric Hack Handicap was considered si good thing for Metallum, who looked to bo a class above the others. Tho All Black mare was made an odds-on favourite, and getting out of the barrier well, sho had tho race at her disposal all the way. War Nurso came at her in the straight, but the favourite went awav again and won easily. There was a boil-over iii the Hack Welter Handicap, in which Tirangn was backed down" to about even money.' Tho favourite showed up two furlongs from .home, where Compel came last. Te Toa led into the straight, but at the distance ,Tui Jitsu drew level, and in a hard finish won by a neck. 'Compel was a length and a half away.. Another favourite in Madam Kistori secured the open six furlongs. The start was a bad one. Gipsy Gem and Movement got away badlv. Tho favourite and Play Off entered the straight in tho lead. Movement, who had made up ground rapidly, came fast on tho outside, and ■in a good finish was beaten by a head. Movement was unlucky to lose. '
A field of four faced the barrier in the Hack Mile. Some Boy wns backed down very short, but Clavi3 beat him homo bv several lengths..-
Tho Farewell Handicap, in which thero were six starters, went to. Karewao, with War Nurse and Kickapoo in the nlnces.
