WELFARE LEAGUE
Sir,—As set forth in your issue of March 15, the intentions of the newlyformed Welfare League seemod, on paper, to be excellent. But there is one thinß lacking. Where do women come in Will llio names of women candidates appear on the league's ticket, or will they bo excluded holus-bolus in the good oldfashioned, way?—l am, etc., demos. March IG, 1919.
Sir,—No one having a sincere and genuine interest in tho welfare of his country can fail to offer an enthusiastic welcome to the New Zealand Welfare, League. It is a time enterprise in this period of reform and reconstruction, Wei have at last a- hope that party politics— which are nothing more than the selfish manoeuvring of politicians to keep themselves in office, and which have always inevitably side-tracked political energy from earnest application to the real needs of the country-will die a natural death, We want to organise politics on the principles of mutual help, co-operation, and public service, instead of those of competition and antagonism. Bolshevism and revolution are tho outcome of tho latter. Strikes are manifestations'of Bolshevism and will be necessary and in-> evitable so long as Capital and Labour continuo to fight like a pair of ill-bred schoolboys. A sincere and unselfish consideration of the interests of all classes, will make 6uch outbursts unnecessary and impossible.
The principles of the league give nreat promise of 'its future work, and more than justify its existence. It recognises that tho true interests of one class are in reality-.the interests of all, and that there can he no renl opposition of in-< terest. Edupation of the public upon matters of politics and the government of their country is much needed; in the past the individual has been 6unk too deep in the narrow rut of his own supposed interests to trouble about those o£ others. Health, the well-being of children, and, I should add, the interests motherhood, are rightly given a prominent place in the league's programme. May the league receive the earnest 6up. port which it undoubtedly deserves ol every self-respecting citizen.—l am, etc., E.- H. WILKINS,' M.B. Pahiatua, March 16.
