NOTES ON THE. RACING. . TlTe V.E.C. Australian Cup Meeting n\is commenced at Flemington on Sat-
urdny, when the Newmarket ITandionp was' rim. Tho Roiiiß was soft and this explains the. slow times registered during tho day. The favourite for the Hurdles was Percolator, a fielding by Comedy King, from AVatershoot-a.mare bred by Mr. H. A. Knight at Kncecou.rse Hill at Riccarton.' The popular , , fancy, fell, end tho race, went to Oriens, The St. Lcger went to Eusebius, who, it:will bo remembered, won tho fareienl Derby oir tho same cour.se last Novembers Ho did not horo a. very strong field to de-foat-tho absence of Einmark takinc nil the interest out of the event. is engaged in- the, Australian ft'up (run ■to-day) with Bst. 21b. The Queensland filly Molly's Kobe won the"- Newmarket from the'Victoriau-owned Sir Ibex. A week previous Molly's Robe rait Cielo to a head in the Oaklcigh Plate, and evidently the extra half' furlong was moro to her liking. Sir Ibex is unlucky. On Tuesday last ho was beaten by a narrow margin in the richly endowed Caulfield Futurity Stakes by Lucknow, and then ngain on Saturday had to lower his colours to Molly'e Bobo, to whom ho was conceding 211b. Tho third horse, Greenstead, occupied a like position in the Futurity Stakes. Supporters of tho winner got a good return for their money. A well-bred filly, in Lisnavane, was successful in the Sires' Produce Stakes. Sho is a half-sister to the erack miler Cetigne, and is tho best of a pretty good lot of youngsters racing in the Commonwealth, this soason. Artilleryman, who ran second, has been somewhat unlucky this season. He is by Comedy King from the New Zealand maro Cross Battery (Stepuiak—Firecross). Bandurria, who finished third, is one of the Linaore tribe, as is Lisnavane. Onlv three horses faced the starter in the Essondon Stakes, and the event went to Star Comedian, a five-year-old horse by Comedy King from Lucky Star (Fortunio-Darkie). The AVairarnpa-owned Scornful filled third position, and thereby earnfd 100 sovs. in stake money. The concluding event went to Shadow Dancer, a geldim? by Tom Wedgewood from Ballet Girl, by Modullion. He seems to be a useful sort, seeing that ho won over tho small fences last spring. Snub, by running third, won 40 sovs., and brought his owner's winnings for the day up to 140 The Saturday favourite for tho Australian Cup was Macadam, a winner in West Australia.
