KING THE FINAL BATTLE The animal prize meeting of tho Domi'.r.im IvjHc Association concluded at Treiitham on Saturday afternoon, when tho King's Prize Match was fired, liitleman li. J. .King, of the Opaki Club, maintained his lead in the aggregate, and won the l.iiiUingor Champion Kille BAi. This is the second occasion on which he has achieved Ihe high honour, the. first being in JilOH.
There was a slight shower of rain in the early morning, and it was feared that tbu day would bo bad. The rain fortunately hold oft, but a stiff breeze got up and when the Kings J'ilty went down on the 800 yds. range a little before 3 p.m. ;i strong and somewhat troublesome rear-wind was blowing. The wind seemed lo increase during the progress of the match, and at intervals it was quite KUoty. Owing to the- arrival oi the Kororata with a portion of the Mam Bodv on board, r.nd the absence of any special railway facilities, .such as used to obtain in former years, the attendance of the public was not so great as usual o.i eiich an occasion, hut taking all the circumstances into consideration the number that witnessed the contest was very fair. / Among the spectators were Colonel Sir James Allen, Minister of Defence. Major-Gonoral Sir Alfred Robin. Commandant of the New Zealand Mill; tarv i'orces, Colonel C 11. Gibbon, Ghict of the General Staff, Lieutenant-Colonel Sleemaii, Director of Military Training, aui other members of the ■ Headquarters Shift. Both Colonel Gibbon and Lieu-tenant-Colonel Sloenian competed at the incctn.K. The match- commenced at J p.m., and its completion took about an hour, it being necessary to fire oil' several ties in order lo fix the position of competitors in the prize list. "VVh.cn the firing commenced, Rifleman R. J. KiiiK was leading in the aggregate with a margin of eight points from lliileinan AV. J. Morgan, of tho Akaraua Club, and Rifleman H. Loveday, of Ohura. Rifleman G. Halliday, of Karori, was lying nine points behind Rifleman King, and Riflemen H. R, Jarvis. of Taradale, aiv.l AV. H. West, of Blenheim, tied for fourth position, each being fourteen point-; away from King. The latter commenced his shoot with a bull's-eye, followitii; this with three others. AVhen tile next fihot. was fired a magpie was signalled, but the three ncit hhots wero "bullioss" Unfortunately, tho two final shots did not quite find the centre of the target, and inners were registered. In the meantime, Rifleman A\ T . H. AVest, of Blenheim, was lollowing hot upon King's trail, his first five shots being bull's-eyes. Next came n 3, then ho found the bull again, and afterwards scored a 4, then a 5, andd finally a 4. Both King and AVest scored the same range total, 4ti, but the former's good lead in Iho aggregate enabled' him to koep fiheud ol liis nearest opponents, and he finished up first with a grand total of 445. Rifleman AV. ,F. Mown, of Akaraiia, who, with Rifleman 11. Loveday, Ohura, was lying in second position, with a score of 391, had vurv bad luck with his shoot. Morgan has the reputation of being a very con-sist-mt shot. He has fired into tho King's Fifty several times, and has always finished well up in the aggregate. His sighter on Saturday was >\ magpie, and his first counting shot was an inner. The remaining shots comprised four 3's, two 4'ri, and three s's, making a total of 39, and this, together with his previous aggregate of 391, brought his grand total up to 43U.' Rifleman Lovertay and Rifleman H. K. Jafvis, of Taradale, e.icl; reached a similar total, and it became necessary for Jarvis, Loveday, and Morgai to lire oft' for third, fourth, and fifth places. The shoot-off, which consisted of five shots per m;\n, resulted in Jarvis bcliij placed third, Loveday fourth, and Morgan fifth. G- Ilalliday, of Karori, an e.ychnmpion, who had occupied third position when the matcli commenced, dropped away to fifteenth place, his Brand total being 4:1:2. His score was made up of five bull's-eyes, an inner, and a 3, but ho had the misfortune to get off the target three times. Three other former champions , . D. Roots (Pntca), J. AV. Miiroy (Xelspn), and Captain K, M. Irvine (Nelson) participated in the match. Roots finished in thirty-third place, his aggregate bcinjj 412 Miiroy was tliirtv-fourth with, a like total, and Captain Irvine thirty-ninth, his aggregite score being 410. The Rifle Challenge Cup. PRIZE-GIVING AND SPEECHES ADDRESS BY SIR JAMES ALLEN, The prize-giying ceremony took plnco after the conclusion of the King's Prize Match, the presentations Ijeing r-.iade by the Minister of Defence, Culonol . Sir Jai.ies Allen. '-'he Trentham Band was in attendance, and as Rifleman King was carried in from the firing-mound :n the champion chnir, they pbiycd "&e, Here tliu Coiiqutrinj liero Comes." In calling upon Sir James Allen lo present the prizes, Colonel R. J. Collins, chief executive officer of the Dominion Kiilv! Association, said the meeting had bjon most successful, thanks to the line Heather experienced and to tho excellent iirr.i!ij.',cmenU made for the meeting by Major M'Crislell, Ordnance Ollicor, Captain IJtion, quartermaster, and his. assistant. Lieutenant Judd. Tho competitors had als:i assisted in every way iu tho cair.vjiv; out of the programme. "Tho primary object of tho Dominion Rifle Association," said Coioiicl Collins, "is to keep up an interest in rille shooting throughout tho Dominion. AVe are desii'Jiis that every young man should bo abls to shoot, eo'lhut if the Dominion is ever called upon again, as it has been called upon in the last four years,-to defciil itself, our sons will be ablo to do I whit their fathers hav.> done for the Empire. ' (Hear, hear.) During its fourteen .par? , existence, the Dominion Riflo Association hod justified itself, and had vindicated the policy it had undertaken of encouraging rifle shooting. The r.sfiocialion believed that a soldier was no good unions he. could shoot. lie trusted that the. Defence Department would assist rill; shooting in every way,' and to this end he suggested to the Minister that arrangements should bo made, first, to hold group meetings, and then district meetings, the object being to make Ilia Dominion meeting n thorough testing ground for the best shots of tho country. AVhat the rifle clubs wanted were good rifles. The rifle which had biM'ii in use at the meeting was not the riilr! of tho future. (Hear, hear.) AVhat the clubs wanted wero good rifles and plenty of ammunition—more than the 5 rounds which were given at present— and they wanted to lx.' able to purchase n'.:-.n;:i]iirion nt: reduced prices. (Hear, liMr.) In extending those privileges the DeiVncs Department would be helping the. chilis tu become active elements in the defence of the country.
Hir .Tntne* Alien sfl'd he joined with Colonel Collins in the . belief that riile shimti'is: should be encouraged, not only because they wanted good shots, but ljecausa h.r looked upon the man who was a viiln shot as « man who took cure of hini?i'lf. "We want all our men to look after themselves and to take carts of themselves, so that we.may. have no unfits if wo have another war," continued Sir ..Tames. Allen, amidst applause. "Regarding rifles, ho was. not in a position then lo say whether or not they had the best rifle. All he could say was that the people of the-Dominion and he, as Defence. Minister, would like to know that the riile that the Imperial Government had selected was the beat that could be produced for every rifleman. If it was not, then they hoped that a better rifle would be selected. Every consideration would be given lo the question of ammunilion. Both General Kobin and ho himself were anxious to encourage shooting, and if they'could provide more ammunition at a cheaper rate then they would do so. The difficulty which had arisen at the meeting in regard to ammunition would bs examined, as they wanted the ammunition to be as perfect as it could be made.. They did not want their enemies to have better rifles or ammunition than they themselves possessed. Sir James Allen concluded by congratulating the D.I?.A. upon its. successful meeting, and by requesting the riflemen to lend their sympathy and assistance to the young rifle shots who were in the Territorial Force, so they in the day of ueed they might b». able to save themselves and their country. He would like to know that every man in the coulhtry could use his rifle (veil.
Rifleman R. J. Khg then stepped upon the platform and til . Champion Belt was placed in position \y Sir James Allen's little granddaughter. The gold medal and gold badge having •been pinned on. Colonel Collins announced that General Robin had decided to present, (o the champion the rifle with which he fired at the. meetinj. Before handing the rifle over, General Robin expressed his appreciation of the fact that Rifleman King had won the championship with the service α-ifle. As the. first president of the D.R.A., as newly constituted, it gave him great pleasure, even if he established a precedent, for other presidents to follow, to hand to the champion the rifle which had carried him .through. Hβ appealed to all riflemen to communicate to Headquarters any suggestions that might be of benefit in improving either the rifles or the ammunition. The .remainder of the prizes were then distributed, and the ceremony concluded with the National Anthem. LIST OF BELT CHAMPIONS.
