The money goes lo patriotic institui tions. Tho Apiti Red Cross Society' has in hand a proposal to erect a memorial to the fallen stjldisrs of the district. I'he society has voted ,£2O for the purpose. The matron of the Palmerston North Publio Hospital has just completed twenty years' continuous service in that institution. The Modical Board will sit in Palmerston from Friday, March 21, till Monday, 2-i. Sc-venteon cases of infectious diseases were reported throughout the Palmerston Nortel Hospital Board district during " February. In reporting this fact to the board the inspector (Mr. M. ■ O'Brien) stated that fll inspections had been made throughout the district. About four months ago the Palmerston North Reserves Committee decided to make au experiment in the direction of doing away with tho gate 3 in the various enclosures of tho Square, and a trial - as made by taking off tho gates of tho northern block on Broadway. It was prophesied at the time that considerable damage would bo dono to the flowers by stray dogs, but so far this has not been fulfilled, and the gates have since been removed from other blocks. The committee has now gono a step further, and the. live fences have been removed along Broadway and in front of the Post Office, throwing this portion of the Square completely open. Many of the bigger totara posts, wlvicli, it is stated, have been down for close upon forty years, were found on removal to bo perfectly sound. A very beneficial rain on Monday evening has now given a fresh appearance to pasture about Tokomaru, which was very dry after such a long spell of drought. The question of water was beginning to be felt by many householders, who were getting short,of this commodity. Tho Palmerston Hospital Board has set up a committee to go into the question of providing some suitable recognition in the shape of a medal or button to those of tho epidemic workers who rendered outstanding services in' Palmerston and the surrounding districts.
